Thailand brushes up on measures to tackle IUU fishing after EU assessment

BANGKOK, 5 November 2015 (NNT) -European Union (EU) Representatives have decided not to remove Thailand’s yellow card status, after first assessment of the country’s efforts to tackle problems in the fishing industry. However, the EU is extending the deadline for Thailand to solve illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing to the end of this year.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister General Chatchai Sarikalya said Thailand is speedily improving the monitoring and regulating systems against IUU fishing to make it more coherent with the country’s fishery management policy. A new action plan will be sent to the EU by the end of this month.

Meanwhile, authorities have already inspected 19 out of the 73 fishing vessels with fishing capacity of more than 60 gross tonnage, operating outside Thai territorial waters. Officials will have to finish the inspection of the 54 remaining vessels by the end of this month.

The ministry is also drafting 11 ministerial regulations on the fishing industry to be finished by the end of this year. Another EU on-spot reassessment is scheduled for January 2016.

With the local fishing grounds completely destroyed by over fishing and the coral bleached and broken the seas around Thailand are about as interesting as a Bangkok Klong.

It's far better to keep Thai fishing boats rotting at the docks than let them continue scouring the bottom for what's left to boil up for fish sauce.

Further more it's just not worth risking a broken back or get munched by a speed boat to go to the outer islands to witness the devastation.

These jive turkey ministries are forever "brushing up", "Planning", "really set to tackle..." ad nauseum. Actually getting them to do something is harder than getting a hooker to pay back a loan.

I agree with you on that ( except for the loan). Just read a Puket Gazzette article about how there were 300 dead endangered sea creatures washed up, in the Andaman coastline, in the past 12 month,

150 of them washed up on Puket's beaches.

40 of them Dolphins.

What amazes me is how attractive a destination spot it continues to be.
