Pattalung to address land encroachment in the province

PATTALUNG, 10 November 2015, (NNT) - The provincial administrative organization of Pattalung has held a meeting on finding measures against public land encroachment in the province’s forest areas in Samed island and non-hunting areas in Songkhla Lake.

Attending the meeting were Pattalung Governor Winai Buapradit and related heads of government units. The meeting was organized following reports of the Palm Thai Pattana Co. Ltd. encroaching on more than 900 rai in Pakpayoon district. The firm claimed to have 23 interim property documents, which they argued grants the company the right to plant palm trees for commercial use.

After conducting an inspection of the land, Director of Watershed Conservation and Management Office Sakda Wichiensilp doubted the legitimacy of the documents, triggering additional examinations. The land was later placed under a 45-day sequestration for further investigation.

The meeting resolved to revoke 11 of Thai Palm Pattana Company’s interim documents. Officials are currently waiting for additional aerial photography of the land, before it can determine whether or not the remaining 12 documents are legitimate.
