NEW YORK: -- In the ‘tempest in a teacup’ category — only here it’s a coffee cup — some American conservatives are seeing red. They have accused the billion-dollar company Starbucks of taking the ‘merry’ out of Christmas by going with a one-colour, no frills idea.

'Egypt is safe' says President al-Sisi, visiting Sharm al-Sheikh after plane crash

CAIRO: -- Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi visited Sharm al-Sheikh on Wednesday in what he said was a message of support for investors and businesses in the wake of a Russian airliner crash that has sparked a costly suspension of foreign flights.

Portugal's president caught in polarity that aborted the government

LISBON: -- Portugal is hovering in uncertainty after left-wing MPs brought about the government’s collapse on Tuesday. It had stood for 11 days. Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho thus led the briefest coalition in the republic’s history. Conservative President Anibal Cavaco Silva is in no hurry to pass the baton on to an eventual Socialist-led government.

US troops didn't have eyes on Afghan hospital before attack

WASHINGTON (AP) — Immediately after the U.S. killed at least 30 people in a devastating airstrike on a charity hospital, Afghanistan's national security adviser told a European diplomat his country would take responsibility because "we are without doubt, 100 percent convinced the place was occupied by Taliban," according to notes of the meeting reviewed by The Associated Press.

Marathon bidding for 4G licences exceeds Bt50 billion after 30 rounds

BANGKOK: -- THE latest bidding price for both 1800MHz telecom licences, as of press time, yesterday had surged to Bt50.530 billion and the latest bid for each licence was in excess of 100 per cent of the full spectrum value. In round 30, the bid for the first licence had reached Bt25.066 billion, 26 per cent higher than the full value of Bt19.890 billion, and the bid for the second licence was Bt25.464 billion, 28 per cent higher than the full value.

Andy White, played drums on Beatles' first hit, dead at 85

NEW YORK (AP) — Andy White, a top session drummer in England during the 1960s who played on songs by Tom Jones and Herman's Hermits among others and stepped in for newcomer Ringo Starr as the Beatles recorded their debut single "Love Me Do," has died. He was 85.

Thailand returns 14 smuggled orangutans to Indonesia
