Govt to start Chao Phraya & Nan dam project in 2016

BANGKOK, 12 November 2015 (NNT) – The government is determined to push ahead with its plan to build dams to raise the water levels of the Chao Phraya and Nan Rivers to promote water transport.

Inspector-General of the Transport Ministry Sorasak Saensombat said the dams would increase the use of water transport from 9.5% to 20%, lowering the cost of logistics. According to Mr. Sorasak, land transport costs 1.72 baht per ton per kilometer, whereas water transport costs only 64 satang per ton per kilometer.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director-General of the Marine Department Somchai Sumanuskajonkul disclosed that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the project is expected to take place in 2016. The construction plans will then be submitted for Cabinet approval within the same year.

Construction of the 477-kilometer dams is expected to begin in 2017 and to take four years. The project is believed to raise the quantity of goods transported by ships from 20 million tons per year to 44 million tons per year in 30 years.
