Meechai defends PM-list proposal

BANGKOK: The chief constitution drafter Friday defended the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC)'s proposal to have each political party prepare a list of prime ministerial candidates ahead of contesting general elections.

CDC chairman Meechai Ruchupan also dismissed the allegation that, with the proposed provision, the drafters aimed to allow a non-MP to become prime minister in the future.

"This sounds like the CDC is able to nominate prime ministerial candidates. In reality, the CDC will not be able to do so. There will be a clause in the new constitution stating that political parties must decide on their PM candidates. This is to stop party leaders from making such decisions on their own," Meechai said.

Yet another step towards total control by certain groups and dictatorship continuing. The PM should be elected directly by the PEOPLE of the country and not selectively "choosen". Too bad for Thailand if this goes through and feel the people will "speak up" during the Referendum, unless the CDC eliminates this step as well.

Let me think:

France

Germany

Austria

Switzerland

Russia

all don't elect the PM directly....
