Starting new school.........Non B and Work Permit expire soon

I am starting a new school December 1st. My current school gave me a WP and Non B. When I start at new school in December, can

I transfer the WP and Non B Visa to my new school? Both schools are in the same province.

In Chiang Mai, and I think the rest of Thailand, you cannot use the non-imm B with a new school to obtain a work permit and visa extension. Embassies/consulates write the name of the sponsoring school on new non-imm Bs and only this school is normally allowed to extend or obtain a work permit with this visa. It was possible to transfer, with the cooperation of both schools, until just over a year ago.

However, if your non-imm B doesn't have a school name written on it and the visa hasn't been extended yet and there's sufficient time left on the visa to extend, you may be able to use with a new school.

Thanks for the reply. It's a shame, because both schools have decided they would "work with me" so I thought it could be done as long as they are both

in the same province, but guess I am a year late and a dollar short. Damn

You wrote in your headline that your visa and work permit will expire soon?

If the school admins have a good connection, it might work out. Can't you take somebody from the "new school" to the DoL and Immigration?

Best of luck.

It still is possible to transfer to a new school if they are both in the same province and in agreement, but it will be a busy day cancelling and reapplying.

Visas are not extended, you get a stand alone extension of stay based on employment, this has nothing to do with your original visa.

It seems to differ from province to province. I'm certain it would work in my province.

But it wouldn't work in a neighboring province, only 65 km away, also called Ubon Ratchathani.

The OP didn't state where he resides.

Thanks for all the responses. I am in Chonburi Province, both schools are willing to work things out. The first school says they will cancel the work permit and give me any letter, or info that I need to set up with the new school. And I apologize, I should have been more clear. My WP and Extension of Stay expire Feb 8th.

Once the work permit is cancelled, you'll have to start over again.

Please be aware that once the work permit is cancelled, your visa becomes automatically invalid as well.

You can get a 7-day extension for 1,900 baht, hopefully with enough time to get all the documents together for a new visa run.

I haven't heard of any other rules, so please forgive me if there's a way around. wai2.gif

My situation may not exactly mirror yours. I was working for a university and when I hit the age limit they could no longer continue my contract. A government facility in a building right next to my place of work and whom I do support for offered me a position. The HR had contacted labor and verified a new work permit was required due to change in position title and employer even though I stayed in my old office. The government facility is within the university but operates autonomous to it.

About 3 weeks before my WP and extension based on work expired they supplied me with the documentation needed for immigration and labor. Went to immigration and the IO was a bit confused and conferred with a senior officer who went through the docs carefully before muttering government employee. smile.png Got the extension and went directly to labor. Handed my documentation over and given a new work permit on the spot and my old one returned to me allowing me to complete my current contract.

As mentioned before, best contact labor department first and see what they have to say and probably someone from the new school. The only issue I see is if you are on a 90 day permission to stay based on the Non-B or do you have a one year extension based on work?

Just a note, some members reported having been required to go to labor first then immigration but it has always been the other way around for me. Maybe clarify with immigration on that point.

Regarding your last sentence, Tywais, it has changed and the visa comes first, then labor department follows Immigration.

..

Some provinces seem to have a different view what sort of documents are required. Ubon Ratchathani Immigration, now almost in Laos ( near Sirindhorn dam), seems to be one of the worst I've ever experienced.

They sent an Englishmen back to get his kids when applying for a Non- O, when he showed up the next day ( a 300 km round trip) nobody wanted to see the kids.

Then a document was missing and it started again. Please come back tomorrow.....facepalm.gif

Yes, that is how it has been done by me for 20+ years so not quite a new change. Also why I was surprised that just recently, a few months ago, at least one member plus supporting posts said he had to do it the other way around WP > extension.

Perhaps if applying for your very first WP you may need to do the WP first to satisfy immigration of your working status?

Just to clarify a little and make sure no-one gets too confused. Visas are not cancelled, only extensions of stay. If you have a visa and you cancel your WP, it does not change your permission to stay.

This is why using the correct terms is so important when asking for and giving advice.
