The local rat population seems to have suddenly exploded!

Any advice about reducing their numbers without resorting to poisonous bait which poses risk to local pet cats/dogs ?

"risk to local pet cats/dogs " Id say youd be doing them all a favour.............only when its too late and they are causing a serious epidemic will they realise the stupidity of their dirty ways

ignore them, they were here before humans and they will be here after. they don't cause epedemics but they can possibly be a vector... luckily we got meds for that now, ignore them.

If you are in a rural area its probably because the machines are in clearing the rice crops and the fields inhabitants are displaced. We have seen an increase in snakes of late too.

Tolerance and patience until they find their way back. If the rats are hanging around its because they have a food source and you need to be looking at why/how.They will move on without it.

We live in an urban area. I believe the rats are originating from a klong.

There are no obvious food sources within our immediate vicinity.

My wife intends to lodge a complaint with the Tessaban today ! smile.png

Take precautions yes, (I have had lepto, it is awful, took about 4 months to fully recover) my point was that rats can not be reduced without a coordinated effort by the powers that be and changes in the way urban society functions. .... start with keeping them out of your dwelling followed with covered rubbish bins and proceed from there.

Rats do not cause plague... silly boy, as stated they are a VECTOR... they carry fleas. ... how many plague cases have recently been reported here or anywhee lately,? chipmonks have sbeen blamed recently for a few isolated cases in the U.S.

Just for info and clarification:

Most historians believe that the Black Death was caused by strains of the bubonic plague.

The plague lived in fleas which lived on black rats.

They gave the disease to the rats. When the rats died, the fleas hopped off onto humans.

Use rat bait (poison) cats / dogs if they eat it they can be sick, rats cannot be sick. Rat bait will not kill dogs/cats.

I can tell you form personal experience here in Thailand that rat bait CAN and DOES KILL dogs

I have just spent a week cutting holes in he ground floor ceilings looking for cable damage as electrical stuff has been one by one not working. I have found five places rats have eaten through the wiring. sad.png

I rewired the lot and repaired the ceilings. Have caught a few rats with the glue traps but one evades me and hear it now and again.

As the traps are not 100% am thinking about buying one of those electric 'sound' thingy's that rats don't like. But how can you tell if the thing works if humans can't hear it except by listening for another visitor.

Anyone tried one of these gadgets, who stocks them. ?

I bought 2 and used them for 3 months. Absolute waste of time and money, never made any difference

Tried one for insects, seemed to attract more. Trans, try some cats, a jack Russell and a gun, forget the traps the big ones can get out.
