Gold shop owner shot dead by a robber in Samut Prakan



BANGKOK: -- The owner of a gold shop in Samut Prakan was fatally shot by one of the three robbers when he tried unsuccessfully to resist their robbery.

The victim, identified as Mr Suphol Chavalakul, 56, was shot once in the forehead with a 9mm automatic pistol. He died before arrival at Samrong Karn Paet hospital.

The victim’s son told Samrong Nua police that his father was in the Suvimon Yaowaraj goldshop in Soi Theparak 10, Muang district of Samut Prakan when one robber wearing a crash helmet walked into the shop, brandishing a handgun. The second robber, wearing a black ski mask to cover up his face, stood in front of the shop while the third was sitting on his motorcycle with its engine kept running.

The first robber used his gun to force everyone in the shop to hand over to him gold ornaments from the display windows into his shoulder bag. Then out of a sudden Mr Suphol tried to draw his .38 calibre revolver to shoot at the robber but the latter saw him and pulled the trigger twice. One of the shots hit Mr Suphol in the forehead and the other missed the target.

Then robber rushed out of the goldshop together with his accomplice toward the waiting motorcyclist who sped away.

on the list to do for a would be robbers, in most countries around the world those shops would be hit

on a daily bases already,

Those gold shop owners should be allowed to be armed or baric ad the shop with bullet proof security

They are not permanent on duty as the police comes in once in a while. The gold shop pays them extra money for the cop to show their presence.

Sadly the Ministry of Interior does not allow armed private guards to guard gold shops such as it is common in Malaysia and Indonesia.

According to Thai police statistics released by the Spiegel Germany, crimes in Thailand have been up by 63% over the past one year.

Not sufficient security, especially in LOS. Interior and exterior surveillance video should be part of every retail operation, especially for high end merchandise such as gold. A concealed armed guard elevated behind a one-way mirror with a clear firing portal down into the showroom so as to prevent collateral damage is the minimum precaution. Rehearsed patterns of behavior in case of a robbery is the next imperative that should be in place. RIP dear sir and the poor family must be devastated. Hopefully, other locals can learn that preparation and planning can be the ounce of prevention that saves lives and financial loss.

Unfortunately, he was probably trying to give them a piece of his mind or telling them that he had anger to think about the massive advantage he'd've had if he shot from the pheriphery with the light to dark ration being also massively in his favour; not to mention the cover provided by the counter, etc.. You're right though, there's no way you should open a shop like that and not think through how a robber will probably get in and how to best deal with them. Door locking systems that don't let more than one person in and can be closed from behind the counter are also a very good idea, as in that way, you don't need to shoot anyone.

clearly this owner was armed, that is what led to his death. He should have just let them take the gold and not resisted. He would likely still be alive and might even had insurance to cover the loss.

As for being allowed to have bullet proof security screens, I am sure there are no regulations against this. Probably a cost saving issue.

In Australia if we had gold shops with piles of gold on full display they would be robbed virtually everyday. No kidding.

They would have to shut down or at least put a cage between them and the public.

Thai pawn shops have cages so why not gold shops????????????????

violent crime is up 18 year over year in Thailand, but the government is not telling the people saving face. let the people know the truth so they can be more alert and take the proper precautions. closing early, lock and buzzer system, bullet proof glass etc.

Or exploiting impoverished peoples for to go into dangerous mines? It's not even a necessary resource like coal, bauxite or tin.

If something or someone needs armed protection it means something is terribly wrong already and perhaps it needs to be redefined.

To arm gold shop owners with more guns will not do anything to stop robberies. People with nothing who have nothing to lose will go to any measure to get some cash in any case.

You are speaking about the mineral Au, that has hypnotized man for tens of thousands of years. Wars have been fought over it, trade has been conducted with it, thousands of lives have been lost in the quest to obtain it. There will always be value in this shiny metal as it is not only used to adorn the human body but is also vital in many industrial applications..

Diamonds are generally more heavily guarded.

Resistance is useless (and, in this case fatal).

The price of gold at the moment makes it hardly worth stealing, let alone murdering someone for it.

One has to ask, where was the "off-duty" policeman when the robbery took place?

Sure Ratcatcher, I know we use it in electronics, aerospace and computers but it's not worth dying or killing for if you ask me. The number one usage of the shinny stuff is still in jewelry and bullion. I know it's Utopic to believe we should just give it away but somehow it seems more logical than killing for it as is happening now in this Dystopia we have created. All Mother Earths resources belong to us all, not just a handful of Uberlords. Strangely enough gold isn't being used more as a medicine like it was in ancient days. That shinny stuff has some amazing healing properties
