Cambodia releases TV spot to promote "code of conduct" for visitors to Angkor heritage site

PHNOM PENH, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Friday released a TV spot to promote the"code of conduct" for tourists visiting the famed Angkor Wat Temple in northwestern Siem Reap province.

Produced by the Apsara National Authority, which manages the ancient site, the 4-minute spot advised tourists not to wear revealing clothes, to smoke, to give money and candy to children, and to take a selfie with monks at the temple.

The bilingual film, Khmer and English, also tells tourists to avoid littering, touching carvings or sitting on fragile structures and entering restricted areas.

"For the preservation and sustainable development of Angkor, our sacred world heritage site, it's our duty to respect the Angkor Code of Conduct," Apsara National Authority's deputy director general Sok Sangvar said in the film.

"These rules are made in order to prevent negative impacts on our temple, our environment and our culture," he said.

Angkor Wat Temple, inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1992, is the kingdom's most popular tourist destination.

The site attracted 1.67 million foreign visitors in the first 10 months of 2015, generating a gross revenue of nearly 48 million U.S. dollars from ticket sales, according to the Apsara National Authority.

An entrance fee to the site is 20 U.S. dollars per day for a foreigner, 40 dollars for a three-day visit and 60 dollars for a week-long visit.

This is a good idea. Thailand should do the same in places like Pattaya and Phuket. "Code of Conduct for Sex Tourists. No touching the attractions, no littering, no revealing clothing, no giving money for services, no smoking, no sitting on fragile bar stools, no candy for children after dark, no selfie's in private with local hospitality workers and no entering restricted areas without paying cover charge. That should restore some decorum and civil behaviour.

I went there in 1994….before it became the zoo it is today. And required such videos to teach people how to behave.

Four of us were the only people in there….yes THE ONLY ONES….and we spent all day there….doing all the temples …angkor, bayon, ta prom….all of them. Looking back it might have been the best trip of my life.

There is a staircase in angkor that is so steep….you can climb up it slowly but there is no way you can descend without toppling over….you have to sit your ass down and descend slowly.

We were requested not to go off into the underbrush for a piss as there were land mines laid by the guards.

They would lay the land mines in the evening to guard against pillaging khmer rouge….then get pissed at night …and in the morning forget where they had placed some of the mines.
