PHNOM PENH (Xinhua) – Four children, aged between four and eight years old, drowned while playing waters in a pond in western Cambodia's Kampong Speu province on Thursday, a local police official said.

The incident took place at 9:00 a.m. local time in Champei village of Oral district when their parents went to reap rice paddy and left them at home, the district's deputy police chief, Buth Bunthoeun, said.

"Three girls and one boy in the same village drowned in the incident," he told Xinhua by telephone, blaming the incident to the carelessness of their parents.

In October, four school children, aged between eight and 11 years old, also drowned while playing waters in a river in northern Cambodia's Kampong Chhnang province.
