BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said yesterday he was sincere about improving the quality of government officers.

The prime minister said he had given an order at yesterday's Cabinet meeting that each ministry should have its own clear road map of what it would do during the first phase of reforms, until July 2017. He added that he was upset that people kept asking him about road maps and reform as he had spoken about this idea many times already.

He urged critics to recall that former foreign minister Surachai Tovichakchaikul had blamed civil servants for the government's past policy failures, including the dissolution of the water committee and the abolition of the high-speed train project.

The prime minister asked why some people continued to criticise him every day, then asked where civil servants' integrity had gone.

The PM said he had ordered Cabinet ministers to consider imposing more assessments on civil servants, in a bid to raise standards so that no one could look down on them again.

He went on to dismiss a rumour that General Kampanat Ruddit would take a seat in the Cabinet to back him up. General Prayut said such support was not necessary because he had always done good deeds and he did not need anyone to watch over him. Prayut cited a previous rumour that he would push his brother General Preehcai Chan-o-cha to become the Army chief, a story that later proved to be untrue. General Preecha is now permanent secretary at the Defence Ministry.

Where has civil servants' integrity gone ?

This from a man who only does good deeds such as granting amnesty to himself and cronies and ensuring they would not to need to explain their amazing wealth and who didn't bat an eyelid when junta members employed family members, 4 in one case, saying it was natural to employ people who could be trusted.

Integrity from someone who demands he not be criticised and should be understood yet if someone says or does anything he doesn't like he's right down their throats including threats.

As for double standards, well in the last week we've seen how those are applied under his control.

He's a great stand up comedian yet it just isn't funny.

Always with the orders!

Whilst it is true that junta-head has waxed lyrical about roadmaps and reforms incessantly, there seems to be few tangible achievements to support the rhetoric.

I can understand why people keep asking him about these issues, as it seems the goalposts keep moving! An interesting reference check to this, from August 2014, is at

Regarding his quip about the former foreign minister, is he not actually referring to Surapong Tovichakchaikul?

As for the pathetic assertion of always doing good deeds. Well, Ben Franklin sums this up pretty well by saying, "It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it".

Perhaps the General should just focus on his work, not coming out every week to ask people to stop criticizing him. Man up and be the PM and not get side track by silly comments and act like a third grader.

Bad image on Thailand and it spreads like a brush fire

He was brought up privileged. He granted himself immunity for the coup. He instituted article 44 which is only another word for martial law. He and His actions are pretty predictable.
