britmaveric Posted October 11, 2006 Share Posted October 11, 2006 Two Australian House owners loose cash and valuables in break-ins. Over the last few days two house burglaries have been reported locally both of which involved foreign house owners. The first case comes from the Royal Park View Estate in Soi Kow Noi. The house is owned by Mr. James Neill aged 70 from Australia. He was out at the time of the theft and returned back to his house in the afternoon and noticed a metal grill on a ground floor window has been stolen. A safety box located in the master bedroom had been removed. Inside the box was 20,000 Baht in cash, bank books, ATM cards, Mr. Neill’s passport, some important land title documents and other personal documents. There were no witnesses to the theft and no fingerprints could be lifted from the scene however in the morning a technician came to the house to fix some power cables. His details have been given to Police and he remains the only suspect in this case. The second case comes from Central Pattaya. This house is owned by Mr. Wisser aged 41 also from Australia. The alleged theft occurred in the early hours of Tuesday Morning and resulted in the theft of 80,000 Baht in cash and two Laptop computers. Mr. Wisser explained to Police that he suspected a neighbor who he believes is monitoring the activities of Mr. Wisser. The money was withdrawn from an ATM earlier in the evening and taken back to the house. Mr. Wisser went out briefly with his wife and returned to find the money had disappeared. A point of entry for the suspected thief could not be determined as windows and doors were unlocked. I didn't think anybody was watching me, felt quite safe and secure as have nice neighbors, guards on duty, and other family in the apartment (!) so I left door unlocked and thief walked in. Police came and promised a very good investigation. Haven't heard from them since. Guard on duty at the time was relieved. Insurance can't pay as no sign of B&E. A friend had her handbag stolen from her unlocked apartment sitting room where a friend was asleep on the sofa! Since my misfortune have spoken with many people and quite a few of them left doors unlocked. They don't do it now! LOCK YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS EVEN IF YOU ARE GOING OUT FOR JUST A FEW MINUTES and even if there is other people in the house!! What if my friend's friend had woken and caught the thief in the act or my family members had seen the thief. Possible they would have been murdered! ' Too true. The quality of these window grills is often just for visual effect: when really the metal is lead-soft. Surely burglar alarms is the way to go? A traditional intrusion alarm is a start although it can have drawbacks. Too many false alarms can desensitize the neighbors who you'd generally be counting on to observe, phone the cops, etc. And if your neighbors don't like you or are themselves the burglars, it's pointless... Even in the best case, burglars won't always be scared off and many alarms won't resist a hammer blow. A monitored service is another alternative although they tend to be pretty expensive. Another key factor is the service level they provide as well as their response time. An option we often recommend is interior surveillance, something that will automatically take photos or video and secure them in a safe internal location or automatically upload them through an always-on internet connection or via the mobile phone network. And the cheapest option of all is to simply bluff. Put up signs indicating video surveillance on the premises and you decrease your risks whether you install security hardware or not.
