Poland calls for extension of EU sanctions on Russia

KYIV: -- The Polish president has called for an extension of EU sanctions imposed last year on Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

Andrzej Duda was in Kyiv meeting with his counterpart Petro Poroshenko.

The EU is set to agree to a six-month sanctions rollover on Friday, but Italy’s prime minister wants to discuss the issue with his fellow leaders in Brussels before they are extended.

Euronews correspondent in Kyiv Sergio Cantone reported: “The question is not just about the sanctions against Russia, but also about the implementation of the Minsk agreement. Especially because next January the association agreement between the EU and Ukraine, which sparked this crisis two years ago, will be adopted.”

While EU sanctions against Russia would seem to be negated implicitedly by Minsk agreement, Putin has continued economic threats against the EU. Italy's concerns have little relevance to EU's extension of counter sanctions against Russia if Italy is trying to use the Minsk agreement as leverage to defer extension of EU sanctions, ie., to its own export benefit.

Probably Italy will not support the extension of EU sanctions against Russia, later during 2016 more countries will not support the sanctions: Greece, Spain, etc.

The countries that will always obey orders from Washington are Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, Bulgaria.

You mean the countries that were brutalized at the hands of the Russians not long ago? It has nothing to do with the US, and everything to do with their subjugation by the former USSR. It wasn't that long ago.

The Baltic Way or Baltic Chain (also Chain of Freedom,[1]Estonian: Balti kett, Latvian: Baltijas ceļš, Lithuanian: Baltijos kelias, Russian: Балтийский путь) was a peaceful political demonstration that occurred on August 23, 1989. Approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning 675.5 kilometres (419.7 mi) across the three Baltic statesEstonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, considered at the time to be constituent republics of the Soviet Union.

The demonstration originated in "Black Ribbon Day" protests held in the western cities in the 1980s. It marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. The pact and its secret protocols divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence and led to the occupation of the Baltic states in 1940. The event was organised by Baltic pro-independence movements: Rahvarinne of Estonia, the Tautas fronte of Latvia, and Sąjūdis of Lithuania. The protest was designed to draw global attention by demonstrating a popular desire for independence for each of the entities. It also illustrated solidarity among the three nations. It has been described as an effective publicity campaign, and an emotionally captivating and visually stunning scene.[2][3] The event presented an opportunity for the Baltic activists to publicise the illegal Soviet occupation and position the question of Baltic independence not as a political matter, but as a moral issue. The Soviet authorities in Moscow responded to the event with intense rhetoric,[2] but failed to take any constructive actions that could bridge the widening gap between the Baltic states and the Soviet Union. Within seven months of the protest, Lithuania became the first of the Soviet republics to declare independence.

After the Fall of Communism, August 23 has become an official remembrance day both in the Baltic countries, in the European Union and in other countries, known as the Black Ribbon Day or as the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism.

Seems the Russians were pretty much minding their own business till the US coup in Ukraine.

Also bear in mind the deal with E. Germany was no NATO expansion to Russia's borders, that was broken. Poland even wants tactical nukes.

Fair enough about former Soviet states occupied being paranoid but the times now are different, that form of occupation is too expensive and there is no indication of the desire anyway.

Interesting that US/NATO war gamed a war with Russia using quite a few scenarios and they found the Russians kept winning. But why let a small thing like that get in way of provoking them? If nuclear no winners of course, but the US neoconservatives need to have their fun.

No there is already a winner. Do you think all the weapons come for free??? They are super expensive and look who has good contacts to the weapon industry. So if you put some airplanes and tanks to Poland there are millions to billions spent and some company will show their gratitude.

Please. Who's troops are on the ground in Ukraine? It sure isn't the US.

Not arguing, and would love to be educated. Can you provide a link that limits NATO expansion? That would be a big deal.

As far as paranoid, many living there experienced this first hand. It wasn't that long ago. I was in many of these countries not long ago. Their resentment for Russia is VERY strong.

Again, a link for the US/NATO war simulation....
