Felangs publicly disrespecting the Thai National anthem

My point is, they have no choice.

They do have a choice , people do not stand every time the NA is played in Thailand, infact, its quite rare that they do .

In Chiang mai, the only place that its observed on a daily basis is at the bus station and the only other time is at the night market on a Sunday evening .

Every other occasion, when the NA is played , people just go about their daily business .

And even at the Sunday market and the bus station people are free to carry on with their business without acknowledging the NA , if they choose to do so

So, with you stating the above, that even in the places it is recognized "people are free to carry on with their business without acknowledging the NA , if they choose to do so",

what exactly is the point of this thread?

Seems the lady in question did exactly this.

Confused.............................blink.png Perhaps I have misread?

My point was that IMO, She SHOULD have chosen to respect the N.A.

Thais NEVER stand up in a private setting. It's all just a show. So the farang woman is real. What's wrong with that?

I am talking about a public place were everyone else abides, you are talking about a private place where no one abides, . Two different situations

Her friend may have been charged with a nefarious offence?

Her passport stamped on her only remaining page.

The police bribed her.

Molested her.

These are all vague unlikely but possible reasons for her non compliance.

She may simply be conducting a quiet protest against the current rulers .

It's nonetheless less most probable she had no reason.

But also not our business as a non Thaii.

Unless concerned for her safety .

I have told girls to put on a bra etc to help them avoid issues.

But the anthem?

No not my business.

It's akin to asking why a visitor to the states isn't placing hand to heart and/ or standing there to theirs.

It's not necessarily rude or ignorant.

A kiwi might rub noses but not expect you to.

I think if asked its more a sign of respect to comply .

Sports grounds and some events.

But it's not a big deal.

She may being female had other reasons .

She could have experienced some discomfort below at that instant.

Many westerners falsely feel they are custodians of Thai culture.

Simply put its always better to let the locals sort out the offenders .

A female westerner would be excused in most cases.

Thais value highly white skinned females .

She most likely meant no real malice and perhaps little was taken.

Certainly it's their pride being played out.

Not our business.

Personally I stand .

But would not choose to lecture anyone who didn't .

It's basically not our anthem or relevant unless at a cinema or sports event.

Then it's polite.

Market places or temples not so sure.

Again she had her reasons.

Move on

Foreigners telling other foreigners how they ought to behave ...... you gotta laugh.

Especially as the foreigner doing the telling has only been here a month.

I'm betting OP wears white cheesecloth Buddha outfits every day and walks around wai-ing bar girls, wait staff, and other assorted lower orders.

Well, you missed my drift. Since they do not do it in private, it's not in the heart. When they do it in public; it's only a show.

Frankly, it seems like the guy that started this thread is the only one that gives a damn about this minor an unremarkable incident. People should be left alone to make their own choices. I could imagine the guy that started this thing advocating that this woman be forced to enroll in an attitude adjustment session.

I personally feel that she did it as a way of showing that shes an individual , an heroic individual who doesnt do what shes told to do or what shes supposed to do , she does what she wants to do and what she wants to do is to do what shes not supposed to do .

An attention seeking public statement to show the World that she doesnt do what other people tell her to..........in her opinion . Petulance in mine

No offer of citizenship or simple land ownership afforded to you. Stand and respect the National Anthem as if you are one of them.

Bit weird.

So, your condition for standing for other Countries National Anthems, is whether they give you citizenship or not ?

That is quite a stringent condition

Bored with this topic now.

I think the general concensus of opinion is, everyone to their own.

Whatever I do or think, you maybe entitled to an opinion, but basically, it is none of your business.

I can actually sing the other anthem, why I learnt it, I don't know, but I do not understand the words, and it really means nothing to me.

Will not stand to respect a

monarchy however have no issues standing to a 'national song' Like the French have.

The Thai National anthem is about the Country, there is a different song for the Monarchy .

So, you should have no issues about standing for the Thai NA

I first visited in 1991.

Like everyone else, I got the bug. Every time I returned home I was sick.

I started to only listen to Thai music, was interested in anything Thai, documentaries, travel programmes, and, as I said, I learnt to sing the King's anthem.

Fast forward 14 years to when I moved here, my attitude changed.

I still love most of it, but the longer you live here, the more you realise you are still only a visitor.

Seen people stop at the top of an escalator on the OnNut BTS a few days ago when the NA started. They didn't pay attention to anything and caused a minor problem that could have injured someone. Respect the the nation and disrespect all the people coming up behind them.

There is a time and place for everything.

The bottom line is you can't be certain .

And even if that's what your instinct tells you it may be coloured by your fresh eyes to Thai sensitivities and an over reaction.

She may well have realised she was leaking from her vagina or had a cramp.

Things are not always as they appear.

Remember that one.

Especially regards woman .

But the more important line is "don't involve yourself ""

Again the majority here with many years experience politely advise to let things be ...without creating drama .

Walk away .

Think

So what?

It's not your country .

Don't take offence on their behalf.

I certainly don't care much about them and their beliefs .

Used to many years ago.

You wil learn .

Just try and not do it the hard way

Just to put it into context .

I do go to that Temple every Sunday evening and Im usually there at 6 PM

Quite often, there are tourists there who havent been here long .

They are sat eating and suddenly everyone else stands up .

They do not realise what is going on and they look around, confused

If they look at me, I gesture with my hand in a "stand up" manner .

It then suddenly dawns on the whats going on .

They then quickly, quietly stand up

And they usually give me an apologetic knowing thankful nod of appreciation

The fact that you go to a temple every Sunday says it all.

When did you adopt your new religion, or for the want of a better word, beliefs ?

I stand for it in public.

When drunk I sing it works as a good ice breaker.

There is a saying as many will know, when in Rome do as the Romans do.

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/when_in_Rome,_do_as_the_Romans_do

I do everything I can to reduce the risk of conflict between myself and the local population and showing respect in this way is one of those.

What other expats male or female choose to do is their business and not mine but the sooner you learn to accept some minimal hassle free aspects of living here you will be left in peace.

Why go out of your way to make yourself a potential target when something like this takes a minute to participate in.

It's funny how people will post on here that they don't participate or have little respect for the national anthem because they they can't own land etc.

Yet they dare not say boo to a goose regarding certain other aspects of living in the Kingdom of Thailand.

Double standards indeed.

The Temple turns into food stall place on Sundays .

I go there for something to eat .

Steak, Satay, Spaghetti and Sushi, all for a reasonable price

The Temple grounds becomes part of the Sunday market, as do other Temples in the area

You and I are opposites then because I am glad to stand up and show my respect for a great man who has advanced the quality of life for the Thai people tremendously over his lifetime.

Shame on you.

I really think that he should be allowed to say what he meant rather than yourself trying to work out what he meant ,

He hasnt replied with what the wager on the bet is, so I assume that the bets off because hes not confident of winning his bet .

I am a bit disappointed about the bet being cancelled, so I wont now be able to collect my winnings, but then again, he probably wouldnt have paid up, anyway .

Not her country, not her anthem.

Why should she stand up?

Because She appeared to be obnoxious and arrogant .

If She genuinely has no respect for Thailand, one must question why She bothers coming here

Playing the "Mr. Pinocchio" role was definitely not a smart choice. If the Thai people @ the scene did not take issue with it, then why didn't you follow that lead, instead, by minding your own business?coffee1.gif

Apparently, you've been surviving in life, totally by the Grace of God, especially since the wisdom of "street-smarts" (obviously) has yet to prevail, even @ this late stage of your own life! Grow up, bloke. Happy New Year wai.gif
