newcomer.... tile or coating, skimmer or overflow?

sorry for such basic questions... about to build a pool in Chiang Mai and can't get the pool companies to be definitive in the 'why's' some say tile some say coating and all say 'up to you' when asked about skimmer vs overflow (infinity) they say overflow about 20% more expensive?

I'm after low, low maintenance but saltwater not chlorine

I did look down the recent topic list and could not readily find the info - sorry if I missed it

If I could, I'd have an overflow pool. I get tired of having to deal with the water level in the pool. We just switched to salt water and love it. Not perfect, but better than chlorine...well...still is chlorine. We still have a bit of chlorine smell after swimming. But better now.

Can't help you with tiles vs. coating.

A lot of it depends on how big the pool is you want... If it's small enough to fit on truck (i.e. < 12M x 6M) it's tough to make an argument that doesn't favor fibreglass, IMHO. If it's larger than that, a lot of the decision then comes down to the design. Complex designs are arguably best implemented as panelled wall pools. But basic "large rectangle pools" are pretty straightforward and cheap to build in concrete & tile.

As for overflow vs skimmer, both have their pros and cons. Overflows cost more because they need the drainage channel, grating and a balance tank. Skimmers cost less, and do a better job of collecting and hiding flotsam & critters, but are subjectively less appealing. Both are able to maintain pool water levels, if designed right.

Coating the walls is a cheap option, remember the surface will have to have a good quality finish, as with all coatings the correct application is of paramount importance any short cuts will lead to disaster and believe me I have seen a good few.

So my recommendation is to go with tiles, using the correct adhesive and epoxy grout.

The recommended flow rate is 7.5 m/3 per hour through a skimmer so depending on your pool size you may need a god few.

Overflow channel is the best as more surface water can be drawn off, especially with the correct amount of inlets installed on the floor preferably 75% of the pool water should be circulated by this means with the remaining through the base sumps (must be at least 2)

A balance tank is essential and needs to be no smaller than 10% of the pool volume.

My recommendation would be to go with an overflow pool.

A point to not that with a well designed hydraulic system one should achieve good filtration and turnover time with our seeing any water movement on the surface!! water shooting out of inlets is very bad practice.

It is extremely important to build up a relationship with your pool equipment supplier they are best placed to advise you on the latest trends in equipment availability and often have access to manufactures design software not available to the general public. One would expect such supplier to give you unbiased advice based on current best practice. Take advice from armchair experts at your own peril.

Having spent 30 years in the commercial pool sector I can confirm suppliers and manufactures should be your first port of call, armed with info from the horses mouth take the info to your builder and demand this is what you want installed.

Happy new year to everyone and enjoy your bright clear clean water.

PS not related to any pool Co or supplier in Thaiand
