Hundreds evacuated amid northern England floods

LONDON: -- Unprecedented flooding in northern England has forced hundreds of people to leave their homes over the weekend.

Torrential rain caused rivers to burst their banks in Yorkshire and Lancashire, and things could get worse as more downpour is forecast for the coming days.

Even city centres weren’t safe, with streets flooded in York, but also Leeds and Manchester.

The government held an emergency cabinet on Sunday (December 27), and promised more troops and more money to help the worst-hit areas. The government also pledged to review flood defences.

“At this time of year, we all feel huge sympathy for those who have been flooded and have had to leave their homes,” said Prime Minister David Cameron.

Christmas holidays were ruined for thousands as waters rose so fast in some areas that families couldn’t grab essentials before fleeing to safety.

As cars got trapped in the floodwaters, an elderly man in a submerged Land Rover had to be pulled through his sunroof to be saved.

What a time for it to happen,those poor people have just had their Xmas wiped out.

Floods are way worse than fire, in that you are cleaning up mud for 6 months. With a fire u immediately know what's lost and what needs to be replaced. With a flood you have to wait until the water goes down, then find out what's damaged.

Fire and water, they make good servants but poor masters.

My thoughts are with those affected by the floods.

....maybe better rename the 'sunroof'.....'emergency escape hatch'.....

LONDON: -- With northern England hit by “unprecedented” flooding, hundreds more military troops are being sent to areas under water.

Prime Minister David Cameron is vowing to do everything possible to protect people and their homes.

But some are asking the question: could any of the flooding have been prevented?

“Whether the flood defences would have stopped this happening, it’s difficult to say. I think it’s absolutely unprecedented, but what we need to do is plan to ensure that this doesn’t happen again in the future,” said one local official in West Yorkshire.

Up to a month’s worth of rain has fallen across northern England in recent days. Lancashire and Yorkshire are badly hit, with problems in the cities of York, Leeds and Manchester.

No deaths or serious injuries have been reported, but hundreds have been evacuated from their homes – ruining their Christmas holidays.

More than a hundred flood warnings remained in place on Sunday, some of them severe, meaning there is a danger to life.

Accountancy firm PwC said the economic loss from the floods could be up to 1.7 billion euros, with the insurance industry bearing much of the cost.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change has had to send a memo out to its staff telling them how to open a door.

Civil servants have been given a safety guide that instructs them how to use doors after a shocking 14 members of staff were hurt walking through them in five years.

A step-by-step memo was sent to 2,440 people at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, run by energy secretary Amber Rudd.

The vital instructions include 'open the door slowly' and if the door has a 'vision panel' look through to 'judge if there's someone on the other side'.

The country would be better off if all these make-work pen-pushers were shown the door.

You could say about MR Cameron , like Nero, he fiddles while Rome burns, or the UK, gives away the British people's money without asking to foreign Countries, Yet Britain's infrastructure, NHS, and many other things are creeking with over load. You have old people who have a choice eat or go cold, Food banks in a Country that preefeses to be the 5th largest economy in the world. People coming into the Country with nothing and getting every thing while the tax payer gets nothing,

True, but believe me if you are the owner of a carpet shop, the next 20 christmases have just come early! As an opposite the insurance companies will be weeping in their christmas puddings!

A terrible experience for all those affected.
