NRSA to make 2016 the year of active steering of national reform process

BANGKOK, 28 December 2015 (NNT) - The National Reform Steering Assembly is determined to make 2016 the year that the national reform process will be actively implemented.

NRSA’s First Vice President Alongkorn Ponlaboot said that the assembly has already submitted all national reform proposals prepared by 12 committees and vetted by the main NRSA meeting during December 21 and 23 to the committee responsible for the coordination of work with other bodies.

Mr. Alongkorn said that now the NRSA Whip will be working on the process of the reform steering plan for 2016 when the assembly is eyeing to be the year which the national reform efforts will be actively implemented.

With such a determination, he said that NRSA is planning a meeting to deliberate all urgent agendas related to the reform plan implementation during January 7 and 8.

If everything goes as hoped, Mr. Alongkorn said that the NRSA will approve all plans and submit them to the Cabinet on January 8 for consideration.

One shouldn't get too optimistic at the prospect of "reform" in a socio-political context:

"Reform is generally distinguished from revolution. The latter means basic or radical change; whereas reform may be no more than fine tuning, or at most redressing serious wrongs without altering the fundamentals of the system. Reform seeks to improve the system as it stands, never to overthrow it wholesale. Radicals on the other hand, seek to improve the system, but try to overthrow it whether it be a government or a group of individuals."

Reform, in the case of Thailand, means strengthening and improving the structures, systems and means by which the "status quo" is maintained.

Which is what every coup (and "re-writing") has sought to achieve.

Enoon, you are far too optimisitic about your interpretation of reform in Thailand.

I suggest it means how the people currently in power can turn their current hold on the reins of power into something more permanent, allowing them free rein ( ha) to commit any crimes and remain immune from any litigation now, in the past or in the future.
