Hi

I was wondering is there anyone in Pattaya area who does Krav Maga which is an Israeli Self Defence system, used by Israeli Military.

I myself am an instructor in Krav Maga under www.kravmagaisraeli.com , though these days I am concentrating on Muay Thai, and my Krav Maga has become a little rusty.

I was wonder was there anyone in Pattaya area who teaches, or has done Krav Maga to a decent level, who might be interested in getting my skills back up, or some private practice?

I am also interested in WWII combatives, and I have alot of KM and Combatives DVDs here too, which I use to refersh my knowledge, though it would be nice to have some people with a similar interest in Reality Based Self Defence to train with.

As I said I mainly am learning Muay Thai in Sityodong camp in East Pattaya, and i have found a guy in Universal gym who teaches MMA to learn me ground fighting which I am weak in.

Other than that it would be nice not to let the KM skills slip away!

Any takers?

Thanks

Gerry

Did you receive your Krav Maga training/certification in Israel or Norway? I know those are big training centers. Krav Maga seems to be a really good self defense system; I once took a three hour seminar. I study Muay Thai and Muay Boran myself and the only person I have met in Thailand that teaches Krav Maga was here in Bangkok. He was a French guy and I haven't seen or heard from him in more than three years so he may have left Thailand. I don't know of any in the Pattaya area.

When was the last time your taught Krav Maga? A lot of the techniques are very similar to Muay Thai from what I've seen.

Yes, it is very similar to MT, as in punch, kick, knee, elbow.

I did it in ireland for 3 years, but the guy teaching it was only teaching very basic stuff, and essentially it was a money racket. sort " give me 8 hours and 300 euro and I will teach you to kill like a special forces soldier" trip.

Anyway , I went to Israel in Jul 2005 for 1 month intensive course, 6 days a week 8-10 hours a day. Learned some good stuff.

There is good KM like where I trained in netanya in isreal www.kravmagaisraeli.com these guys can fight on the ground too like BJJ/Wrestling too, as well as normal KM.

Then there is "bad km" where do can do the techniques perfect, with partner who complies with them, but would not be able to fight their way out of a wet paper bag. I Thai kicked a "bad KM" guy from france a few times in the leg lightly and he complained to the head insturctor that I was "too rough to train with".....what a wimp.

Yeah I have been in contact with the guy in BKK, but I do not think he is too active in teaching.

KM got some good stuff, but Muay Thai training is 1000% better for striking training, and few KM people train the MT way.

I really like this sort of stuff www.urbancombatives.com and did a bit of that mixed with KM.

As I said I am pretty rusty at the KM, and have the DVDs to sort of refresh my knowledge of the technqiues, especially the weapon defences.

I would prefer to 70% do Thai, 20% learn grappling/ground (just in case) and 10% on KM....just to remember it, since i spent a long month in Israel learning it.

I though elements of KM mixed with combatives to Adults in Ireland from Sept to Dec last year, just before I moved to Ireland. just basic strikes and escapes, that normal people wanted to learn, to get a bit of confidence. All nice people who paid me, but none would last 5 mins in a Muay Thai camp! LOL!

The KM I learned in Ireland was BS compared to what I learned in Israel.

The Polish are very good at KM and we had 10 polish mainly special forces and cops on the course too, who took the training real serious, and had the skills too.

I d still rate Muay Thai as better.

It's interesting that you think Muay Thai is better than Krav Maga...do you mean Muay Boran? Muay Boran is very good for real fighting and includes throws, locking/breaking techniques and groundfighting. The modern, sporty version of Muay Thai is good but I think Krav Maga is more suited to actual fighting on the street since it has no sporting elements; just get in, mess up your attacker and get out.

I did not learn, yet any Muay Boran, and have been trying to get to the bottom of what it really is. Different people tell me its different things, some say its just the older muay thai you see at demos etc...

When I was training in Nong Ki Pauyuath (in Burriram where Nampon, and Numbakaun both who fought R Deeker) Master Pramote who owns the camp, taught be 15 Master Tricks and 15 Complimentary Tricks.....is this part of Muay Boran? He also said there is 52 other Master tricks but he does not teach these, as some are very lethal. He showed me one move that invovled a thumb in the eye. (Punching the Lamp/light...was the english translation).

See its how KM is trained....the best way of punching is to train like a boxer...as their the ones in trying to KO the opponent. Now some KM traing the punches Mc Dojo Style as example.

The Theory behind KM is great, but is it trained in an effective way is the question. Are you sparring, or just practicing a one step technqiue against a willing training partner (mc dojo style).

Where I trained in Isreal they were good in all ranges, from punch to ground. and of course the weapons stick knife gun defences are good, then more advanced you got the military stuff, against assault rifle etc.

Yes its a good system if trained right, as per MT syle IMO. but alot of KM especially in USA has gone Mc Dojo.

So who in Pattaya or where could one learn Muay Boran?

PS....what I think is better for the street is Lee Morrisson www.urbancombatives.com or www.geoffthompson.com

How if you have good solid thai as a foundation, and add in some of this on top....now your talking street lethal.

Gerry, not KM and not in Pattaya, but if you're ever in Bangkok and would like to see what we do in Jeet Kune Do, exchange some techniques and maybe a bit of friendly sparring let me know.

sure will, I think we were in touch before on your JKD Board, under Sifu Mark Stewart?

I really am interested in JKD, read a few book on it in my time, but I never really seen it live as such, I liked Paul Vunaks approach RAT system....though I think he may have drifted from the original JKD system???

Yes, we spoke before Gerry, we are Mark Stewart's group. I haven't seen Vunak's stuff but there seems to be many different takes on JKD around the world, depending on what period of the founder's life the student was trained in. We follow the later stages, the mix of boxing with fencing footwork and theory. Simple & direct. Daily decrease rather than an accumulation of techniques. Well hope to meet you soon, I don;t know much about KM but I think we may have similar training methodologies.

well now I am in Pattaya, and alot near BKK, it will be much easier for me to reach, as opposed to a 7 or 8 hour horrible bus ride from Isan.

Jeeze as a kid, I read Bruce Lee Fighting Method 1 -4 until they fell apart with wear and tear! LOL!.

Is www.hardcordjkd.com more of the early approach, as opposed to your approach?

Was in Singapore for a few days on biz the other week, but was sick as a dog with a fever, so going to see Sifu Stewarts class, was last thing on my mind!

Very rusty on the KM, but been working the Thai a decent bit.

The principles behind KM are common with JKD and WC.....attack and defend at same time etc....

I'm not too familiar with the Hardcore JKD lot but I'm sure they're good at what they do. Mark will be teaching in Bangkok soon, will let you know when. By the way, what Mark teaches is pretty far from wing chun, although he does show some WC for historical interest.

I found videos online that have helped me tremendously. I take classes twice a week and practice with these online videos the rest of the week. Thought I would share the information...

http://sports.expertvillage.com/interviews...-techniques.htm

yeah....good basic KM.

I was trained in Israel myself, where its a bit different.

You would want to be roughing it up about 500% more to get a real effect, and also do sparring.

If you get the odd blody nose, or the odd black eye, or give the same...thats about the right level of sparring.
