Hi, I have a non immigrant O A retirement visa which says " enter before 22 January 2016.

I have booked a flight to KL Malaysia on the 20/1/16 and am returning same day to Thailand.

Just want to confirm that I DO NOT NEED a re-entry permit as it is 2 days before the re enter date, yes ?

Immigration will stamp my passport 'Admitted till 20 January 2016' true ?

Additionally:

I am returning to Australia for 3 months departing on the 3/2/16. For this I WILL NEED a re-entry permit which I can obtain for 1000 thb at my local immigration office say, this week yes ? All I need to show is my passport and give two passport size photos ?

Thanks

  • You do not need a re-entry permit for the Malaysia trip.

If you enter on or before Jan 22nd you will be granted a 1 year stay. Entry on Jan 20th gives you a new permit to stay until Jan 19th 2017.

Yes you will need a re-entry permit for the Australia trip and anytime you leave and want to return before Jan 19th 2017. 1,000 baht or 3,800 baht for a multiple re-entry permit.

Excellent information, as usual. I'd add that OP can obtain his re-entry permit at the airport when he flies to Australia instead of going to his local Immigration Office.

Thanks for the advice. It's Krabi airport which is a small one. I'll try to get the re - entry permit there rather than do a special trip to my local office. That is if they are there to issue permits. I've read at some airports it's not available all the time.

The advice to get the permit AFTER I return from KL with the 12 month stamp - is it a disadvantage to do it as above ?

Thanks

Oops. I was thinking you were flying out of BKK or DMK. Not so sure Krabi airport is going to be doing re-entry permits. Better check on that.

Don't get the re-entry permit until AFTER you get back from Malaysia - you don't need it until after the "permission to enter" date passes on your original visa.

Yes because if you do it now it will expire 22 January THIS year.

EDIT: that's probably not correct but the point is you want to use it or your next permission to stay rather than your current one.

Hi, did the visa run as it's referred to yesterday.

On my return through immigration the officer seemed bemused when he studied the computer screen ( I'm guessing he saw that I departed on the same day and here I was again ) . After sometime time he stamped my passport and hand wrote the date of permission to stay 'until 18/1/17'' , seems he looked at the previous re entry which said I could stay till the 18/8/16 and followed that. My original visa expires on the 22/1/16. He wrote the same on my new departure card.

All good I guess, soon back to Oz for three months :-)

Cheers for the advice

You got the correct date on your entry stamp.. You get one year from the date of entry not when your visa expires.

Be sure you get a re-entry permit before you leave to keep your 1 year entry valid.
