Health Service Support Department takes strict control on 63 surrogacy clinics nationwide

BANGKOK, 13 January 2016 (NNT) – Health Service Support Department Director General Boonreung Traireungworawat said the agency has strictly controlled surrogacy clinics under the Protection of Children Born Through Reproductive Technology Act, effective since July 30, 2015.

He said there are currently 63 surrogacy clinics nationwide where the doctors operating the service are legally obliged to hold a certificate from the Medical Council of Thailand. Besides, a committee needs to be set up to control quality and ethics at the clinics. The panel is required to consist of at least four persons and apply an information collecting system.

The surrogate needs to have experienced pregnancy and be a biological relative of either the wife or husband who is infertile.

Any clinic owners who do not comply with the law are subject to six months to 10 years in jail or a fine of 10,000 - 200,000 baht.
