Lively trade reported at Thai-Cambodian border after arrival of AEC

CHANTHABURI, 22 January 2016 (NNT) - According to the provincial tourism association of Chanthaburi, the Ban Laem Market on the Thai-Cambodian border was able to generate 8 billion baht in terms of trade and tourism since the formation of the AEC.

The Border Tourism & Trade Association of Chanthaburi made the report during its recent annual meeting also attended by government officials and the private sector in the province.

The association claimed that, after the establishment of the ASEAN Community early this year, its membership has grown beyond 4,000, while the number of entrepreneurs and investors engaged in cross-border businesses with Cambodian and Vietnamese counterparts has also increased. Cooperation has also expanded in the fields of tourism exchange and labor to work in the Thai agricultural sector.

The association said that member entrepreneurs have been asked to attach importance to maintaining fair trade principles in all business deals and non-interference in human trafficking.

The association urged the government to help mitigate drought impacts in the province, suggesting construction of a small reservoir in either Soi Dao district or Pong Nam Ron district.

Happy talk.

Oh, it's the NNT again.

There are 5 parts of the AEC - Labour (restircted to 8 professions only), Goods (customs duties being reduced mainly), Investment (equal protection for investors in other countries), Capital (mainly stock market related) and Services. There are also a couple of other facilitations - eg the Visa free travel for ASEAN citizens.

This trade has nothing to do with labour and is not in the 8 professions anyway.

The visa rules for Thais and Cambodians to travel visa-free were implemented nearly two years ago - so that part of the AEC can't have been the cause.

The changes to the customs duties have been implemented over the last 4 years (and really no changes occurred at the end of last year), so that part of the AEC can't have been the cause.

For border trade there is no need for investment or capital changes - so that part of the AEC can't have been the cause.

Given that trade in goods is not trade in services - it can't have been that part of the AEC either ..........

I wonder ......... Is that 8bn baht in new/different trade - or just the normal trade that occurs anyway?

Oh dear .........

the Ban Laem Market on the Thai-Cambodian border was able to generate 8 billion baht in terms of trade and tourism since the formation of the AEC.

wow - all that in 3 weeks. Well Thailand has solved all its economic problems and need not worry for 2016.

Off course AEC is a big success for Thailand and now very soon Thailand is a HUB of something or the other...
