SAMUT SONGKHRAM, 24 January 2016 (NNT) - Samut Songkhram province has organized an event to clean Amphawa, its most popular tourist attraction, in an effort to raise awareness on public-private cooperation for clean communities.

Director-General of the Department of Local Administration Jarin Chakkaphark on Sunday presided over the opening ceremony of the event. He was welcomed by Samut Songkhram Governor Jitra Phromchutima and her deputy Amphon Angkhaphakonkun. After a merit-making ceremony, they collected waste in Amphawa canal and cleaned Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram, a royal temple where a monument of King Rama II is situated.

The director-general said the event was part of the government’s policy to encourage the public to manage waste in their communities. Government units and the public worked together in cleaning roads, canals and other public facilities across the country, said the director-general.

Mr.Jarin added that the ministry had chosen Amphawa since it was an important tourist site. Tourists would return to Amphawa if they were impressed by its cleanliness, he said.

The government wanted Thai people to have a good quality of life and live in a good environment, said the official.

Is this paid for by foreign tourists in the form of a new 360 baht milk-the-tourist-tax?

After this effort, it will be 420 baht

Now there's a good initiative. And as always it did NOT come from TAT...

Don't go on the hour long boat trips, they only last 40 mins!

Can we not even acknowledge and recognize them for doing something positive?

Or are we just going to bash them anyway because it's the Thais doing it- so it must be flawed?

Bash them anyway, you know it's the sensible thing to do wai.gif By coincidence I have an Amphawa t shirt on at the moment having been there a few times.

Well, if we must:

On my laptop I thought the boat's driver was wearing a sex-ed T-shirt.

Had to fire up the big screen to see that it's not... Or maybe I just need new glasses.

It's not a bad floating market as these boring places go, largely for the big river. There is a better one not far from Bang Kae the name of which eludes me. There the boat trips are longer than stated and you get off and walk through very interesting old housing and garden areas and even into an old house with royal connections, all away from any roads or cars, then back on the boat at another point. 40 baht I think it was.

This clean up should be a normal, everyday part of life not a once in a lifetime event.

Would be nice if they show the prices at their fruitstands, tourists still have to pay double there.

Wow

1. I don't speak Thai. Because I am dumb.

2. Cleanliness, being sanitary and selling Outdated food offends Thais.

3. But money creates ideas.

Now going back to 2

During the clean up I hope they didn't bother all the BIG monitor-type lizards along the canals. Of course I'm assuming Amphawa hasn't got all civilized and the lizards moved on. That's what I remember most about my visit to Amphawa around 5 years ago--the many big lizards seen along the canals while talking a boat tour.

Certainly can't criticise the idea of cleaning and I hope it has the desired effect. I've been there once a few years back and it was quite nice. The only bad part was the van ride there. Let's hope this becomes normal rather than an event.

good news for once.

keep up the good work.

maybe the police and army can join in since they don't seem to have anything to do.

replace their parachute medals with trash can medals.

you know, trash cans with wings on them. smile.png

and now on to drivers education.

No can help...they are maxed out collecting donations at police traffic checkpoints and following unhappy people around.
