Tourist attacked by shark at Hanalei Bay on Kauai, Hawaii

HAWAII: -- A tourist visiting from Minnesota man who had been surfing by pier in Hanalei Bay on the island of Kauai in Hawaii was bit as he was paddling his way back to shore. Although he did not see it, the man believes it was a shark that bit him this afternoon at around 2 pm.

Lifeguards said he had lacerations on both of his hands, which fortunately were not life-threatening. The tourist chose to drive himself to a medical facility to have his hands checked out.

Beautiful spot. A stand up paddle boarder reported a tiger shark, approx 10-12' long, bit the back of his board last week, 23 January.

The pier there is very close to a river mouth (pak nam in Thai). This time of year there is usually a lot of rain and the water is murky during rainy periods. Pretty sharky area. The pier is well inside the outer reef surf breaks, would make sense for a tourist from Minnesota to be trying out surfing in small waves. Even a 3 foot long shark could easily bite off a finger or 5, this guy was pretty lucky, or maybe just scratched from the sandpaper like shark skin?
