Turkey says Russia violated its airspace, Erdogan calls for meeting with Putin

post-247607-0-80835200-1454196879_thumb.

The Turkish government has announced that a Russian Sukhoi 34 fighter jet violated Turkish airspace on Friday despite several radar warnings.

“We are making a clear call to the Russian Federation not to violate Turkish airspace, which is also NATO airspace,” the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.”

“We are emphasising once again that the unwanted consequences of such irresponsible behaviour will belong fully to the Russian Federation.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday evening called for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the incident.

NATO has urged Russia to “take all necessary measures” to ensure NATO airspace is not violated.

Russia, which has an airbase near Latakia, started a military intervention in Syria’s civil war in September, following a request from the Syrian government.

Tensions between Ankara and Moscow have been high since Turkey shot down a Russian warplane in November, which it said had violated its airspace.

Russia insisted the jet was over Syrian territory when it was hit, had never violated Turkish airspace and did not receive any warnings.

Love how the Russian media deal with this. And dismiss it as propaganda due to Hollywood! LOL Ya just can't make this stuff up. I feel sorry for the average Russian citizen.

Turkey says Su-34 violated airspace, Moscow shrugs off report as ‘propaganda’

He denounced the claim that Russian pilots had been warned “in English and Russian” via radar as a story made up by “ignorant propagandists who watched too many Hollywood action movies.”

As a Turkish person, I can tell you that the Turkish media is possibly even worse. Especially since 2-3 years ago, most of the mainstream Turkish media have become pathetic propaganda tools of AKP/Erdogan.

The media freedoms/independence situation (along with many other important things, such as human rights and judiciary independence) is fast deteriorating in Turkey, under the current Islamofascist government.

Russia Today (RT) is not for domestic consumption (and it is rarely even about Russia these days). But, you're right, the average Russian citizen who can't leave or care to go online has to suffer and don't even know it.

Here's an interesting article from the NY Times...

‘Out of My Mouth Comes Unimpeachable Manly Truth’
What I learned from watching a week of Russian TV.

I am the subject of an experiment. For the next week, I will subsist almost entirely on a diet of state-controlled Russian television, piped in from three Apple laptops onto three 55-inch Samsung monitors in a room at the Four Seasons Hotel in Manhattan. (If I have to imbibe the TV diet of the common Russian man, I will at least live in the style of one of his overlords.)

....doesn't sound right...

He's desperate to have a one-on-one with Putin, absolutely desperate since Putin put him on 'ignore' in November. Word on the street is that Turkey is going to invade Syria west of the Euphrates and wants to discuss this with Putin before he does it, as it is an act of aggression and there is a faint possibility that NATO might leave him high and dry.

Erdogan, a despicable fellow.

Neither side is believable. That said there is tracking that is 100% accurate. There is no

doubt the US has it. The question is will they ever release the data or just comment

that data supports Turkey, its fellow NATO member. All this said the Turks claim

the Russians violated its airspace for 17 seconds. The Russian plane was hit and

went down in Syrian airspace. That would mean the Turkish missile violated Syrian

airspace and possibly the Turkish fighter plane as well. Is this the reason the US

will not release the data. Inquiring minds want to know. whistling.gif

Nothing Turkey says sounds right to a Greek!

I notice that Erdogan is still trying to drag the UN into it !

The US has surveillance planes in that airspace constantly. They know every plane that's in the air, where it came from and perhaps what it's doing. All communications is monitored. They did release an unofficial statement that they heard the warnings from Turkey to the Russian plane and confirmed it was in Syrian airspace.

Yes, 17 seconds is not much time. But it wasn't the first time this happened, and sadly, wasn't the last. Happened again as we see here. What do you think Russia would do if a Turkish war plane entered their airspace?

Russia’s Defense Ministry on Saturday denied the claims by Turkey. Konashenkov said: "I am convinced that even Turkish air defense specialists know that radar stations controlling airspace may only register the altitude, course and speed of the object in the air. None of these radars is capable of establishing the type and state affiliation of the air object -

Great propaganda for the Russian media. But not true. As usual.

KALKAN is a three dimensional radar system for low and medium range air defense mission operations. Benefiting from its electronic scanning capability in elevation and multi-beam architecture, the radar enables fast and accurate detection and tracking of low altitude air targets in three dimensions, providing the air picture for the command & control system.

KALKAN can track multiple targets accurately, adding classification and identification information to each target track. The system employs a phased array antenna with multi-beam architecture optimized for search and track functions. KALKAN is a compact and easy-to-use standalone radar system with sensor on a trailer towed by a tactical truck.

KALKAN can send target and jammer reports to Command Control Systems over its radio and can receive commands from the C2 system. KALKAN is currently the main radar of the Turkish Armed Forces' mobile Air Defense Early Warning and Command Control System (HERİKKS) and Medium Altitude Air Defense Missile System.

Should add that NATO has several E-3 Sentry planes at their disposal. I'm sure they are all in touch with each other.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_E-3_Sentry

NATO, as a single identity, also had 18 aircraft manufactured, basing them in Germany. The E-3 was also sold to the United Kingdom (seven) and France (four) and Saudi Arabia (five, plus eight E-3-derived tanker aircraft).

......................

while as an air defense asset, E-3s can detect, identify, and track airborne enemy forces far from the boundaries of the U.S. or NATO countries and can direct fighter-interceptor aircraft to these targets.[2] In support of air-to-ground operations, the E-3 can provide direct information needed for interdiction, reconnaissance, airlift, and close-air support for friendly ground forces.[2]

Erdogan, a despicable fellow.

Yep, Erdogan sure is despicable. Especially in the past 3 years or so, there are numerous examples of his despicable actions and speeches. I wouldn't know where to start !

The Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, is not much better. He is actually like a puppet of Erdogan. He cannot undertake an important decision without Erdogan's consent. By being a puppet of Erdogan, he has also become a major part of the 'atrocities brigade'.

Will these people ever be taken to an international court ? Sadly, my guess is no sad.png

And, the US and many other Western powers also share responsibility in the atrocities, by still supporting these Turkish politicians.

I posted this elsewhere, but let's not forget what started this mess. A maniacal dictator who killed his own people who were innocently protesting. Like has been done before. Then, Russia and China refusing to stop shipment of arms into Syria. Which are coming in from many different nations around the region. Iran being a big one. Russia the other.

The "eye in the sky" knew where it took off from. Turkey is part of NATO.

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2015/12/31/awacs-d31.html?view=article_mobile

With the assistance of highly developed radar technology on board, AWACS planes can track and identify aircraft more than 400 kilometres away. Unlike ground-based radar, the AWACS supplies detailed data on low-flying aircraft.

.....

. By conducting surveillance of airspace with the AWACS, they will be able to follow the movements of Russian planes in detail and attack within seconds when required.
