BANGKOK, 8 February 2016 (NNT) – Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is scheduled to attend the US-ASEAN Summit in California between February 14th and 18th.

Sek Wannamethee, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the prime minister will take part in the inaugural US-ASEAN Summit which will be held in Rancho Mirage, California on February 14th to 18th, at the invitation of US President Barack Obama.

The spokesperson said it will be the first time the US and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations meet on an official platform following the formation of the ASEAN Community on December 31st, 2015.

The platform will allow the US and the ASEAN Community to discuss economic relations, strategic partnership, and international issues.

Mr Sek said while attending the summit, the Thai Premier will push for greater economic cooperation between both sides with a hope of benefiting sustainable development.

Perhaps Prayut can explain why he has delayed joining TPP while other ASEAN contries are doing so. But when Thailand's current sustainable development requires protectionism, he couldn't really be very honest in his explanations.

Why would a military coup leader, denier of freedom of assembly, and oppressor of free speech be at an ASEAN-US conference? Photo opportunity?

Look into our eyes: Sign TPP, you will be wealthy beyond belief. Sign TPP, you will be wealthy beyond belief...........

Do not look at the clauses giving corporations the ability to over-ride and supersede the laws and the legal systems of sovereign nations, don't look, don't look, don't look.....

Look into our eyes: Sign TPP, you will be wealthy beyond belief. Sign TPP, you will be wealthy beyond belief...........

If Thailand signs and joins the TPP, they basically will be giving their country away to a cartel of bankers and thieves.

I can't think of anything more stupid than giving away your country to an empirical war machine.

You do it Thailand and you're done, you will be owned by foreigners, your greatest fear will come to fruition!

Because he was invited as an ASEAN leader by the host, President Obama.

While the purposes are worthy, the result of Mr. Obama’s initiative will be an unseemly parade of dictators at the Sunnylands resort, including a few long treated as too toxic to be granted the recognition that comes with an official visit to the United States. They include Hun Sen, the tyrant who has dominated Cambodia for the past 30 years; Prayuth Chan-ocha, the general who overthrew Thailand’s elected government in 2014 and since has dismantled its democratic institutions; and Najib Razak, the Malaysian prime minister who has carried out a massive crackdown on domestic opponents in the past year while fending off major corruption allegations. Even Burma, where the opposition recently won a democratic election, will be represented by an autocrat,

Sounds like Prayuth will be amongst equals. Nice of Obama to appreciate reality in calling this meeting. Now, with this show of realpolitick, if he'd just have his State Dept tone down its push for American style democracy in Thailand -- while saying little about even worse situations in neighboring countries.

He's never been to CA, so it's a free trip. Funny, he wants to talk about sustainable development, but what about sustainable Democracy...slaves, human trafficking?

Priorities! It's like the cops focusing on petty crime when there is a rash of murders

hopefully he will have a good translator. Otherwise he will be speechless.....

He will and so will most of the others.
