Meechai insists election to be held in August next year

BANGKOK: -- The next election is likely to be held in August next year which is still in line with the political roadmap set by the government, Constitution Drafting Committee chairman Meechai Ruchupan said Tuesday.

He ruled out the speculation by some members of the National Reform Steering Assembly that the election could be postponed until early 2018.

The CDC chairman said the committee would set the priority for the drafting of ten organic laws related to the charter draft, including the election law.

Regarding the appointment of senators as stipulated in the charter draft, Mr Meechai said that the issue remains inconclusive and he is yet to take into consideration all the opinions about the issue from all stakeholders.

He explained that he cannot give a definite answer now because the information is not complete yet.

“If it can be written in the charter draft, we will do it. But if not, we will write it in the organic laws. As a matter of fact, we wrote it (charter draft) in a way that it can be amended. If everything was written in the charter draft, there may be problems later on because we may miss something,” said Mr Meechai.

Is it' insists ' it's August or ' likely to be ', quite a difference ?

Is Meechai now running the govt and making major decisions as he has a lot of definitive things to say for himself but of course if he's proved to be completely wrong he won't be taken to task as there will have been ' circumstances ' which made it necessary to postpone elections again.

Perhaps he is being lined up to become the "Civilian" prime minister, when "circumstances" rule out an election?

What a nonsense putting off an Election is. The Charter will not be approved, the cycle of deception goes on.

Any excuse, and immunity for those who decide when.

Very Banana Republic, very foolish.

The fortune tellers have spoken.

Only a puppet is talking, reminder that.

If they are grooming him for this position I think they better put him on an overdose of Geritol so that he is there to cross the finish line. Kind of reminds me of a song "Promises promises that all I ever get"

Poor Meechai - just where do these rumors come from?

CDC President: Election could be moved to the end of 2017, 2016-01-30

"The President of the Constitution Drafting Commission has suggested that the election date be delayed for a few months from the expected mid-2017 schedule.... Mr. Meechai said that the election will still take place in 2017 but it may be around the end of the year instead of the earlier expected date."

Drafters of the Thai Constitution are entitled to a little meomory loss. Otherwise they could never start. wai2.gif
