BANGKOK, 14 February 2016 (NNT) – The Prime Minister and his official party departed Thailand today to attend the special US-ASEAN Summit with the intention of promoting cooperation and strategic partnerships between the two political entities, says a spokesman.

The Deputy Government Spokesman Maj Gen Weerachon Sukhonthapatipak disclosed that the Prime Minister and his party of delegates left today at 8am to attend the special US-ASEAN Summit held in Rancho Mirage, California, in the United States, from 14th-18th February 2016. The Prime Minister is attending the formal talks at the invitation of US President Barack Obama.

The spokesman said the United States sees a role for Thailand at the center of ASEAN, to drive forward cooperation in the region, while the Thai PM will be seeking cooperation in innovation and advanced technology learning, the capability enhancement of SMEs, and increasing the value of agricultural produce.

The summit will be a good opportunity for Thailand to demonstrate to ASEAN members and the global community its sense of social responsibility, its stable and outstanding role with other ASEAN members, and accomplishments in governing.

There is so much to say, but none of it would be wise!

He will be in good company. Only three of the nations there, from Asia have elected leaders. Phlllipines,Indonesia, and perhaps Singapore. All the rest are none elected leaders. The United States is really showing their hand on this one.US is desperate clawing at straws to stay afloat. Thailand should do well at this meeting.

Quick, close off the borders!

He will be grounded by papa Obama 55555. He's a bad student...555555

That's the sentence I reacted to. The US has one of the most robust economies on the planet so it's hardly clawing at straws.

Please use discretion in your references to the government. Phrases which can be considered as anti-coup will be removed. Referring to Thailand or the government as a dictatorship, military dictatorship or other such terms will be removed. Any posts which can be construed as rumor mongering are not allowed.

Please note, if the foreign media uses those terms in their articles does not make it ok to use their references here.

Ok thanks for the explanation.I was not clear also.. What I was referring to was America trying to keep China from stealing their trade countries. The country that wishes to exemplify democracy is ready to sleep with 7 countries led by non elected leaders.

One thing is consistent. Thailand always speaks for others rather than quoting others. I wonder which high level US official actually said anything remotely similar to that statement.

BS.

I wonder if the Americans at the summit will ask the PM why Thailand, with a population of 70 million, only has 20 copyright inspectors for the entire country.whistling.gif cheesy.gif

A Robust economy ? 17 Trillion Dollars in debt...most of it to China !!

Since Obama won't be there who is the boss going to sneak up on to try to get a handshake photo op?

Most of the PMs have side agenda meeting leaders of industries and big corporations to woe their investments while their wives will be on a charm PR itineraries visiting schools and charity organisations. I hope the PM office has made such arrangement making full use of this opportunity and less on visits to tourist sites.

MZurf is correct here. In past years China bought up U.S. Treasuries in order to keep its currency cheap. But now, China's economy has tanked and they have stepped out of the market, selling off much of their U.S. Treasuries stockpile. Other investors have stepped in and the demand for U.S. government bonds is strong. Compared to the overall global slowdown the U.S. economy is strong as well.

I wonder if reporters will be given a fruit throwing opportunity.

Anything to do with TPP? Why was the general invited in the first place?

Yes, I agree. The USA has also said that it will not even look at any new countries; until another two years.

Thailand missed the boat !

Thai delegates join in US-ASEAN summit

Bangkok, 15 February 2016 (NNT) – Thai delegates have traveled to Rancho Mirage in California of the United States of America to take part in a US hosted summit with the leaders of ASEAN today and tomorrow.

Thailand has placed great importance on the gathering as it is hopeful of forging partnerships with the US in a range of dimensions from security to economics and sustainable development. As a member of ASEAN, it is looking to enhance ties with the US and in turn to other world powers.

The US made known that it set up the meeting as part of its rebalancing towards Asia as it looks to play a bigger role in the region.

Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha is leading the Thai delegation to the summit, which kicked off with talks on economic matters such as regional innovations and business ties. He is to meet US President Barack Obama when the latter holds a working dinner at the end of the first day of the meetings. The second day of talks is to focus on security matters in the Asia-Pacific region.

Director-General of the Department ASEAN Affairs Chakkrit Sriwali said that summit is to end with the signing of the Sunnyland Principle by all ASEAN leaders.

While at the meeting, the Thai government will aim to reassert the conclusions of the latest ASEAN Summit, which include sustainable development, security cooperation and increased awareness of ASEAN in the US.

It is also likely to discuss the issue of terrorism and related challenges with the PM to suggest increased sharing of intelligence between the US and ASEAN.

Yes, yes, welcome to America ..let us extend our big-brother hand to you in the form of ASEAN.....

will there be a coup while he's away?

Bet Obama thinks Richard Potato is a village idiot.

security matters in the Asia-Pacific region

Hopefully Prayut will explain why the decades old Muslim insurgency hasn't been resolved, now with mostly civilian 6,500 deaths. With ISIS/Daesh radicalizing Muslims around the world, this ongoing conflict can easily degenerate into a more virulent insurgency that can spread into more of Thailand and into Malaysia.

Give the man time, he's only been PM for 2 years. Rome wasn't built in a day.
