North of Ubon

Featured Replies

Hi all, planning on going from Ubon to Mukdahan next month on thee bike. I had a good look at the options but since I've never even been to that part of the country, I can't really tell which would be my best route. The less traffic the better, reasonably direct and a bit of scenery wouldn't go a miss. I'm assuming the 212 towards Amnoet Charoen is the best option. Has anyone cycled along it? Would I be better off heading towards Khemmerat? Is there much less traffic that way?

Would like to hear from anyone in the UBon area as I need to plan my trip and start booking things. I plan to take the 212 north to Amneot Chaleon (sic) and beyond. Any comments on that road are much appreciated.

Never been in that part of the country Deserted. I'm sure you've looked at the usual suspects like 'crazy guy on a bike' etc - but that's all I have to offer.

Good luck and enjoy!

Post a trip report.

Actually, I'd forgotten about that site, thanks for reminding me. Having looked at some posts, the journey will be as I expected.

Follow the Mekong you'll see nice scenery......

That route is a good few km longer and much of the road isn't close enough to the river. I prefer to stick my head down, go straight and get on with it. I went from Ubon to Savannakhet in two mornings, it wasn't hard. The road was really nice and Amnat Chareon is a good stopping point between the two destinations. Not much traffic but not much to see but nice smooth surface, straight, no problems encountered of any kind.
