BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Commerce has stated that it will be enforcing laws involving foreign nationals and trade to control Chinese fruit traders that are taking advantage of local farmers.

Wiboonlak Ruamrak, the director-general of the Department of Internal Trade (DIT), revealed that following the department’s efforts to enforce strict controls on fruit exports to China, Chinese ‘Longhs’ or traders have been forced to resell low quality fruits such as longan, durian and mangosteen locally being unable to meet General Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.

The so-called Longh business is a joint venture between Thai and Chinese dealing with the sorting and grading of fruits for export.

According to the Thai Alien Business Act, these businesses are not allowed to market their products locally.

The act stipulates that these businesses are only allowed to purchase, collect, sort, grade, and package local fruits for export purposes.

She said the department said that it will begin making inspections on all foreign owned fruit traders within the next few weeks to make certain that they are all legally registered.

There have been an increase in complaints from fruit farmers in the country that a number of Chinese ‘Longhs’ had failed to meet contractual agreements when they refused to buy produce from these farmers which they had earlier agreed to do.

In many instances, low prices have been given for fruit claiming the produce did not meet quality standards.

All these issues fortunately are addressed by the Thai Alien Business Act an official action will be taken as soon as possible, she said.

According to statistics, there are at the moment 148 Chinese ‘Longhs’ or fruit traders legally registered in the country and the department stated that officials will be making checks to see if any of these have violated the Thai Alien Business Act.

Why would the Chinese want to import low grade fruit into their country....sell that crap to Thai's. Wonder how long this has been going on.

Try buying teakwood in Bang Sue, it's all B-choice....The A-choice will go overseas. Of course you pay more for the B-choice then the A-choice will cost in Europe.

Did the farmers make agreements about the fruitsize the chinese would buy?

You also won't find big mangosteens in Thailand, they go overseas. The small fry stays here.

On every local market you see people picking the biggest fruit. And on every market you won't see the top-fruit priced so they can change the price when it suits them...

Maybe us farang should also cry more to the government. We pay the highest prices as well.....

Go to MBK and see how they sell the copycopy vests and jackets. If you look swedish you pay double, simple as that. In the meantime the baby from the vendor drives his cart into your expensive leather shoes and don't even think he would care for that.

"There have been an increase in complaints from fruit farmers in the country that a number of Chinese Longhs had failed to meet contractual agreements when they refused to buy produce from these farmers which they had earlier agreed to do."

I'm assuming the buyers offered to purchase fruit of a certain quality. If the farmers fail to meet those standards there is no obligation to buy them.

Not sure why the farmers aren't allowed to sell the rejected fruit locally though. Trying to keep prices at a certain level by controlling the quantity of fruit coming to market I guess.

Actually Thailand is losing allllooooot of much money selling farmed fruits to chinese middle men who in turn RIP off thai farmers with confusing rates. Most of thai fruits go to china with almost no tax. and the chinese. being chines in thailand they feel like they can PISS on any thai they want. yet... when i buy something online to deliver to me ... I have to pay tax before i can even get my item. <deleted> Government personell who do not resolve this issue MUST GO TO JAIL for supporting the LOSS of FACE to thailand. and fruit farmers should NOT SELL direct TO CHINESE because they will not offer the correct rates.

Just the beginning of the slippery slope....the Chinese only want the cream.....

Well if they made contracts about the fruitsize then it seems very simple to me, just measure the fruit.whistling.gif

Looks like the chinese investors are came to Thailand with their own interests and not to help thailands economy...

Really? Come on I cant believe that, they are the Chinese. After all it is a well known fact they would rather lose money than upset anyone, and they most honest helpful people in the world

I don't think the majority of thais could identify a Swede from a group of random farangs from Europe, USA, Oz and n Zealand

Maybe your imagining things?

In my experience, they will overcharge everyone they can set mbk, best to set the price your willing to pay and be prepared to walk away...

The tall long white farang with blond hair are easy to find. They also wear the expensive shoes/clothes and most have a suitcase or backpack.

There are no american tourists in the MBK, Oz and NZ yes but they have more tan.

I can understand their languages so it's easy for me.

Those vests/jackets are all copycopy brandname stuff, very low quality for a high price. A vest should cost 300 baht (or less) but they ask 2000.

Jackets from The North Face or Canadian Goose are everywhere but cost almost the same as online in the US.

I was in the NIKE factory shop BKK last week, there were busloads of chinese shopping there. They are smart and don't go to the MBK.

Well to be honest who still goes to MBK anyway?

For years it's been full of Arabs, Indians, lower class Thais, Vietnamese, Malaysians and the occasional cheap "farang". However, Chinese, middle class westerners and middle/upper middle class Thais have never been in abundance there.

Personally I very rarely go and don't see the attraction of going in the first place. Apart from the mobile phone shops perhaps, but that's about it.
