28 provinces currently at risk of water shortages

BANGKOK, 26 February 2016 (NNT) - The committee overseeing drought issues will deliver water to 28 provinces likely to be affected by water shortages.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikulya said after joining a meeting of the drought crisis prevention committee, that there are 12 provinces currently declared drought-stricken zones. He revealed that another 28 provinces in the North and Northeast are at risk of water shortages.

Both the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will join hands to deploy water trucks to these provinces. Artificial rainmaking operations will be carried out across the nation on March 1 to rehydrate affected areas.

Gen Chatchai stated that there is sufficient water in the four major dams combined for general consumption until July. Relevant agencies have been instructed to provide daily updates on the water situation to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.

Public Relations Department Deputy Director-General Jamlong Singto-ngarm will use every communication channel to promote water conservation and publicize the government's drought prevention measures.

No gutters on most houses and no tanks, to hold the house hold use of that water, with all the plastic bottles and rubber that is available here, there must be a way to combine both products melted down and re invented as tanks at discount prices that householders can purchase, provided they purchase the thin cheap gutter to catch the rains when they come, it may help the consumption if enough tanks are offered,

I think that's a good idea. Recycle the plastic and sell it with the gutters as a "set".

I can't understand why people here haven't implemented rain harvesting decades/centuries ago. They know from past experience just how dry it can get between rainy seasons.

Every little bit helps.

In my area and many others, people who have collected rain water for use forever have stopped.

This is due to the pollution pumped into the atmosphere from factories built here in Issan recent years,

I don,t know if it makes the rain water harmful or not, but the emissions from the factory are so bad at times you can smell the air pollution, and it does not smell good at all!

My family now buys bottled water rather than collect rain water, just like other families in the area.

We live in rural Khampaeng Phet next to the Mae Wong national park which is where our government water comes from.

I have a total of 27 ongs to store water. They each hold around 1,500 usable litres of water. 20 ongs are cross connected and the other 7 I use to top up the main ones.

In normal times they are topped up from the government water supply. In the drought times when no government water is available we get them topped up by the local fire truck.

Last year (2015) we had no government water from mid January until mid August.

This year the government water went off in mid December 2015 and we have no idea when it will come back.

It depends on if and when the rains start and how long and heavy it rains. 2 nights ago we had about 1 hour or so of fairly heavy rain, the first rain for 6 weeks and it just sank straight into the ground.
