Scepticism in Aleppo about whether Syria truce will hold

With a fragile truce agreement coming into force in Syria on Friday night, there are hopes that it could be a step towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.

The agreement, brokered by the US and Russia, excludes large areas of the country.

The Syrian government has said it will continue to fight the Islamic State group and the al-Qaeda linked al-Nusra front.

In rebel-held areas of Aleppo, there was a lot of scepticism about what it can achieve.

“The majority might be committed to the ceasefire, but not all the parties. The regime will not commit,” said Aleppo resident Abu Hussein.

“Tonight the truce will be effective., but the jets are still in the sky and that is why not all the parties will be committed.”

Abu Mohammad, a fighter with the Free Syrian Army fighter, said: “The truce was invented by the regime because the terms of the agreement are for their sake not for the sake of the Syrian people and we do not expect this to be the beginning of the end of this crisis.”
