Cambodia to Hold Fourth Angkor Sankranta Festival

Khmer Times / Ven Rathavong

Siem Reap hopes that this April’s Khmer New Year Festival –also known as the Angkor Sankranta festival –will be even more successful than last year’s event, according to the head of the festival’s executive committee Sok Sabayna. This year’s celebration will be organized for the fourth time since its inception in 2013 by the Union of Youth Federation of Cambodia (UYFC), which is led by Prime Minister’s youngest son, Hun Many.

Mr. Sabayna said that despite the event’s trend of increasing in size year-to-year, he could not estimate the number of tourists and locals that will descend on the Siem Reap festivities next month. Last year, it attracted about 1 million tourists and brought around $60 million into the local economy. 2015’s three-day festival was also noteworthy for the two Guinness World Records that were set during its run, which set the record for the world’s largest sticky rice cake – 4 tons – and most participants in a Madison dance – 2015 young people.
