NHRC calls for women to have better role in governance for International Women's Day

BANGKOK, 7 March 2016 (NNT) – The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC) has urged the government to support women in having a greater role in dictating the direction of the nation on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2016.

The NHRC’s subcommittee on women’s rights has held a seminar for International Women’s Day and handed out awards to women who have fought for human rights. The awards went to individuals involved in protecting miners in Wang Sapung District of Loei province, individuals who have combated human trafficking, Atchara Achanayokchat of the Bangkok Post and Pimnapa Pruekphan; wife of environmental activist Billy Pruekphan, who continued her husband’s work after he disappeared 2 years ago.

NHRC member Angkana Neerapaijit pointed out that women continue to be threatened in a number of ways in modern society, whether through derision or violence. She explained that laws protecting women in Thailand continue to be lax and urged relevant state agencies to provide better protection for those fighting for the rights of women in line with the practices of the United Nations.

At the same time she called for the government to support women in playing a larger role in governing the nation.

International Women’s Day was mandated by the United Nations to be observed on March 8 of each year to create awareness about the roles of women and to improve their equality in society.
