TURKEY -- Five migrants, including a baby, are said to have drowned after the speedboat they were in capsized off the Turkish coast.

They were hoping to reach Europe via the Greek island of Lesbos.

Nine people were reportedly rescued by Turkey’s Coast Guard.

Those onboard the boat were said to be from Afghanistan and Iran.

More than 130,000 people have reached Europe from Turkey so far this year, according to the International Organisation for Migration, while 350 people have died while making the perilous journey.

The latest deaths come just days after the EU struck a draft deal with Turkey to curb illegal migration in return for billions of euros in aid.

The poor child was killed by his parents ,looking for an easy life in the west, they were safe in Turkey

You may be right that it was not a good call by the parents, but (unless you know more than what is reported by the OP) we do not know the specifics of their lives. They may have been safer in Turkey, but do we know the specifics of their lives in Turkey. Maybe they had friends and/or family waiting for them in Europe. Maybe, considering all of the factors in their decision, it appeared as a worthwhile risk without our advantage of hindsight.

Of course, this is a heart-wrenching tragedy and I can understand your concern. Still, it may be better to set aside judgements.

Could have said, 5 illegal migrants, or 5 including 4 adults or even just 5 migrants; but that would not be sensational enough would it? The parents are murderers and the media are bottom feeders.

They were killed because of what was probably a careless boat driver. The child was no more killed by his parents than the hundreds of people in Thailand are killed by their own carelessness for getting on a ferry, or a bus, or a mini-van or a motorcycle taxi.

If you want to apportion blame, how much should go to the people that threw open the doors with an invitation to come to Europe?

Well, Merkel is partly to blame as well then...

When you get on a van or into a car ,you are making a journey that is legal , if the driver is negligent ,i agree with you , these people were making an illegal journey , they did not have to get into the boat , they are to blame as much as the boat driver .

I agree with you Scott, but sadly I don't think Merkel will in a million years acknowledge any guilt of her own for any of this, even to herself. It is all everyone else's fault.

Under international law if those who drowned a sea were genuine refugees they are not defined as 'illegal migrants'. Before you or others claim Turkey is a 'safe country' at this stage, again under international law, the claim is incorrect.
