Zoos keep animals cool by spraying water as temperatures rise



BANGKOK, 18 March 2016 (NNT) - Hotter temperatures in Thailand have prompted several zoos to spray water on animals and provide them with frozen treats to keep them cool.

As the days grow hotter, zookeepers at Dusit Zoo have resorted to feeding the monkeys and bears with sweetened ice cubes. Water sprinklers and large buckets of water have also been placed inside the cages to cool down large animals like elephants and tigers.

The rising temperatures could potentially be dangerous to animal well-being. At Songkhla Zoo, a firefighter truck has been brought in to spray the tiger cage. Summer this year is expected to last longer than the year before.

In Chiang Rai province, smog continues to affect communities in Mae Sai district. Air particles were last recorded at 175 micrograms per cubic meter, which is considered to exceed safety standards. Water trucks are being used to spray water into the air along the street and in populated areas to lower the pollution density.

There is a westerner here in Issan who is breeding huskies, and offering them around for sale. What the hell is he thinking? I'd like to put him in a fur coat and make him walk 100 miles in today's 40 degrees heat.

It is so dry, that my pond has no water in it anymore. My dog, a golden retriever, look at it, barks and run accross a field to take a swim in my neighbours pond.

ItS good to see they take care of the animals in the zoo.

I call this a "four-shower" day...

Is he making the huskies walk 100 miles in 40 degree heat? Incidentally, I think you'll find that every dog in Isaan, regardless of the breed, has 'fur'. What do you propose for them?

With that attitude to water use, I would hope that you don't take showers in this hot weather. That would make you a hypocrite.

I don't think Huskies are indigenous to Thailand or any other tropical clime.

Save water . Shower with a few friends. Female of corse unless you swing the other way.

I am glad to see water is being used in the proper way and I think this is a very good way instead of seeing it being thrown about by mindless human beings at songkran .
