Civil servants, police officers and retired officials with disabilities will receive a Khmer New Year’s bonus of 50,000 riel (about $12.50) next month, a fraction of the $37.50 request that was made by a union last week.

Members of the legislature, courts, police force, as well as Interior Ministry prison officials, military police, officials with government contracts and also probation officers will receive the 50,000 riel, according to a government sub-decree released on Friday. Retired officials with disabilities will also receive the same amount. The bonuses will be transferred directly to the bank accounts of officials – those without bank accounts will be given cash.

Last week, the Cambodia Independent Teachers’ Association (CITA) sent a letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen requesting 150,000 riel ($37.50) bonuses for civil servants, saying the salaries of teachers, government officials, soldiers, police officers and members of the armed forces was too low to pay for the expenses associated with Khmer New Year. Last year, the government gave 40,000 riel to all civil servants in the country.
