The National Assembly’s human rights commission met Justice Minister Ang Vong Vathana on Friday to discuss the problems surrounding the country’s court system, including procedural issues, government interference and lengthy pre-trial detentions.

After a three-hour closed-door meeting between Ms. Vong Vathana and head of the opposition-led human rights commission, Eng Chhay Eang, the pair held a press conference.

After the meeting, Mr. Chhay Eang said he believes the judicial system will move forward and improve its procedures throughout the Kingdom, adding that he will send a number of complaints related to the judicial process to the ministry for thorough examination.

“After this meeting, we believe that the judicial system will be better and improve,” Mr. Chhay Eang said. “In general, whatever we do we have to believe in it. If we do not believe in our work, why do we do anything?”
