A two-month international hunt for a man suspected of raping and murdering a teenage girl in February ended yesterday morning when 21-year-old Dang Yang Do was detained by a joint task force led by the Child Protection Unit (CPU), Cambodian police and overseen by Vietnamese police in Any Yang province, Tien Bien district, Vietnam.

Mr. Yang Do is suspected of killing 15-year-old Choub Srey Pov, who went missing while visiting family in the ethnically Vietnamese Cambodian village of Toul Sangke for Chinese New Year. Her body was later found tangled in reeds on the bank of the Tonle Bassac and a crime scene investigation found she had been raped and murdered.

The Child Protection Unit (CPU), a branch of the Cambodian Children’s Fund, joined Cambodian National Police and Vietnam’s police and formed Task Force Delta 16 to hunt down the killer. The CPU’s James McCabe said the testimony of several Toul Sangke villagers was crucial in helping the task force find the suspect.
