RAYONG: -- Agriculture officials in Trat and Rayong provinces will step up their inspection of vendors selling durian to make sure that they will not cheat by selling unripe durian to their customers which will hurt the image of the provinces and that of the country.

A meeting of officials concerned was held Wednesday at the chairmanship of Rayong deputy governor Thirawat Sudsuk at the provincial hall to brief them of how to check the quality of durian, to distinguish the ripe from unripe durian.

Apart from the field inspection of vendors selling durian, the deputy governor said that the provincial administration would also launch publicity campaign of the need of quality control to convince customers.

In Trat province, Mr Wanchai Charoenchai, Khao Saming district agriculture chief, said a campaign had been launched to urge durian growers not to cut unripe durian for sale.

A durian exporter, Mr Kosol Bunyapanya, said that the selling price of Mon Thong durian has dropped to 80 baht per kilomgramme from 125 baht a week ago largely due to the fact that there are now more durian.

Also, he said that Chinese buyers have cut back their purchases of Thai durian because they were not sure that they would get quality fruit.

The government is only building its legacy: the lottery prices are fixed, there's water to throw for Songkran despite a record drought, and now the ripeness of Durian is soon to be a right enshrined in the legal code. Utopia achieved.

Bloody ridiculous that government is wasting time/money on durian.

Ripe or unripe buyers of durian will know if it is ripe or not.

As previously stated do something about the carnage on the roads.

Now that is important.

"which will hurt the image of the provinces and that of the country."

Yep - one of the greatest problems facing the Kingdom of Thailand in the 21st century is the proliferation of vendors selling unripe Durian. No wonder that it receives such priority treatment. What will the WHO be thinking ......?

I would venture to guess that the AG officials being paid by taxpayers would not know a mango from a durian, much less

if the durian is ripe or not. As I have mentioned before there is a Thai law on the books that selling unripe dirian is to be punished by a 2 week jail sentence.

You cheat your customers and wonder why your market shrinks, next step ask the government to give support to durian farmers from taxpayers payments.

In other news, hoards die daily on Thailand's highways as there is no concern whatsoever for enforcing traffic laws. What the heck, as least people have safe durian! TIT

I think they have enough people in Thailand to do more than one thing at a time. I would not suggest that Agricultural Inspectors should drop everything to enforce traffic laws. There are many things to work on, not just one. I would hope that you agree with this.
