Min of Energy to import 10 trains to improve railway transportation

CHONBURI, 1 April 2016 (NNT) - The Energy Minister has inspected the stockpiles of LPG gas of PTT in Chonburi province, while calling for the procurement of new trains to enhance the efficiency of rail transport.

Energy Minister Gen Anantaporn Kanchanarat inspected the LPG storage sites, which ship natural gas to the northern and northeastern regions. Every day, as much as 600 tons of LPG are shipped to Nakhon Sawan province, while 600-800 tons are shipped to Khon Kaen province.

The Minister of Energy has urged the PTT to hold discussions with the State Railway of Thailand for the supply of 10 additional trains to optimize rail transport under the four-billion-baht investment policy.

Rail transportation is noted for being able to deliver large amounts of goods at 50 percent the cost of road transport. The train procurement program is expected to be concluded in 2018.

In the last two days I've taken the train from Chiang Mai to deepest Issan (really couldn't face a 15 hour cross country bus journey). It is really noticeable that the quality of the permanent way and hence the ride has dramatically improved - concrete sleepers and new rail. They also seem to be installing a lot of new level crossing barriers, and loads of new spacious freight yards. Maybe these yards are for handling bulk loads like these?

It's a done deal from the headline but, when you read the article it's all theoretical. Is he talking about locomotives or rolling stock?

Whosoever writes these headlines really needs to read the the article although I appreciate the translated reports are often confusing.

I would assume they mean locomotives. As the unknowing call these trains. To move that kind of tonnage on a 3ft 3" gauge track you would need 20 X 50 tonne wagons. I assume their track as I have seen is heavy enough to accept this. My assumption is they have the rolling stock but not the locomotive power

What happens, pray tell, when natural gas train tankers go off the tracks due to old/faulty rail lines and/or get hit by buses, trucks, cars, etc at at-grade rail crossings in Thailand???

"What happens.........................?"

THIS! Sometimes............

Ye of little faith, nothing is going to happen! Everything is under control. Just like the article said, there will be 10 trains....locomotives....tank wagons added to the fleet soon....how soon....very soon....soon....sometime in the future....we will give you a call when we place the order!
