Chaiyaphum holds a workshop on prevention of domestic violence

CHAIYAPHUM, 6 April 2016 (NNT) – Chaiyaphum’s provincial administration and the Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office have recently organized a workshop on domestic violence prevention for local administrative officials at Tat Ton National Park in the central district.

Participants were expected to form a network to prevent domestic violence, provide assistance to victims of domestic violence, as stated by the government's Fight for Zero Violence policy.

The attendees learned more about objectives of the policy which highlights protection for women and children against domestic violence, along with the details of the 2007 Protection of Domestic Violence Victims Act.

The workshop highlighted section 5 of the act which states that a person who has found or known of domestic violence shall have the duty to notify a competent official.

The workshop also looked into the sections that deal with rehabilitation of the violence victims.

In attendance were members of the community-based Family Development Centers and local administrative officials from each of the province's 77 sub-districts.

Perhaps arresting, prosecuting and imprisoning perpetrators of domestic violence would be a better first step to show that the government means business when it comes to DV. It is difficult to prevent domestic violence in a culture where it is accepted if there are no penalties. Once that first step is taken and has the public's attention, then education will tend to be more effective.
