NLA votes in support of a question about the Senate’s right to select prime minister



BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly on Thursday approved with 152 votes in support of the inclusion of a question in the national referendum about whether the appointed Senate and the elected House of Representatives should select the prime minister.

None of the assemblymen voted against the inclusion of this controversial question seen by the opponents of the National Council for Peace and Order as a means to stay on in power through the selection of an outsider as prime minister.

15 members of the NLA however abstained from the voting.

NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholachai said he would submit the result of the vote to the Election Commission which was designated to stage the referendum in accordance with the interim charter.

Mr Klanarong Chantik, vice chairman of NLA’s panel to study the drafting of the constitution, said that a clause should be included in the provisional chapter of the draft charter stating that the Senate and the House should jointly consider the selection of the prime minister during the 5-year transitional period.

On the same day, the NLA endorsed by 171 votes against one opposition the national referendum bill.

Everything is being set up for a puppet PM. The world won't buy this farce and I hope the Thai people won't.

Sounds like a real controversial question where everybody agrees on the vote; it was so controversial that everybody thought the exact same

That either means the question was not controversial at all, or the NLA is not representative of the people they pretend to represent.

Are there 250 members of the National Legislative Assembly? Or 200?

Most votes seem to be 180-0 with a few abstentions. They don't seem to debate much?

What's the point, couldn't they (and their familial staff of five) be replaced with a 30 baht rubber stamp and ink pad?
