Three bomb suspects arrested



YALA: -- Three southern militants suspected of commandeering a pickup truck driver to drive into Yala town with 160 kilogrammes of homemade bombs, while holding his wife hostage, were arrested last night.

Yala police said security authorities searched three houses in Bannang Satar district and detained three persons for questioning after trailing their escape routes through surveillance cameras after a group of militants stopped a pickup truck, forced him to drive his truck to the town with the explosives on board while holding his wife hostage on April 5

DNA tests on one suspect proved to match DNA sample on the pickup truck they commandeered the driver to drive into the town.

All the suspects were sent to the interrogation centre for more information to hunt down all the escapees.

Earlier on April 5, the truck driver was ordered to stop for check by a group of armed men dressed in military fatigue.

But the armed men blindfolded the driver and his wife and drove his truck away for a few kilometres.

They later unfolded the couple, ordered the husband to drive the truck to park in front of a car showroom in Yala, while holding his wife hostage.

However the driver immediately alerted the police after driving into the town.

Explosive ordnance disposal police later managed to detonate the 160 kilo home made bomb on the truck, averting tragic explosion if it went off.

The new tactic by the southern militants by commandeering food vending pickup truck they loaded with bombs into town prompted security officials in the South to call meeting to map out measures to counter the new insurgency tactic.

Normally food vending pickup trucks were given less attention by security authorities while passing roadblocks.
