Public vans still popular among Songkran holidaymakers

BANGKOK, 11 April 2016 (NNT) - Public van stations surrounding the Victory Monument are flocked by holidaymakers heading to other provinces to celebrate the Songkran festival.

Most of the van passengers at the Victory Monument are traveling to seaside provinces in the eastern region. More passengers using interprovincial public vans are expected to increase after the government launched measures to stimulate tourism during the Thai New Year period this year.

More northeast-bound passengers are expected from 11-12 April. Tickets to northeastern provinces will not be sold in advance and no vans will be added.

Military officers are deployed at the van stations to facilitate and provide security for the public.

Popular or basically the only affordable option.

Have you ever seen how many BMWs and Mercedes there are in Bangkok?

Yeah right, they're the transport option of the majority of the population.

Just use the vans to save on washing them, eh?

Or maybe it's just nostalgia and tradition, do you think?

Deary deary deary...

Knowing how fast and reckless those van drivers are going and the countless fatalities and injuries have

been attributed to van's road accidents, I just wish and hope that this year the number of dead and injured

will be kept to the minimum and that Songkran will not mean grief to too many people.....
