Five Arrested Over Stung Treng Market Fire

Featured Replies

Khmer Times / Mom Kunthear

Five security guards at Stung Treng Market were arrested and detained for negligence after 1,220 stalls and shops burned to the ground on Thursday night, with Prime Minister Hun Sen ordering provincial officials to rebuild the stores for the vendors.

Ek Sivandorn, Stung Treng provincial deputy police chief, told Khmer Times yesterday that the cause of the fire was still unknown.

“We are not sure yet about the reason why the fire burned the market and completely destroyed all 1,220 stores and shops,” he said. “We do not think the fire was due to electricity because it automatically cuts off every day at 6 pm.”

The Prime Minister took to Facebook on Saturday, sympathizing with business owners who had lost their stalls, ordering the Stung Treng provincial governor to rebuild the market as soon as possible.

“Please let me share this difficult moment of grief with you. I have ordered the provincial governor to coordinate the work for you for the first step,” he posted.
