Four day stopover in Muscat

Featured Replies

Anyone taken advantage if the free four day stopover in Muscat with Oman airways ?

I was there in late 1989, during the preps for the first Gulf War. Nice place, well-governed - authoritarian but British style. Worth a visit.

Beautiful place. We stopped there often (before there was a war going on in the area) with Oman air. Last time was 2 years ago.

I'd be working out the total cost of my "free" stopover before deciding. It's surely a nice city to visit and some great hotels to enjoy, but also some much lower scale places perfectly OK to sleep in but not much more.

You may be pleased to know that Oman's not on the list:

  • Security Alerts: Seven U.S. embassies in Jordan, Israel, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain warn Americans to exercise caution and vigilance due to potential escalation.

Source: Newsweek.

I always wonder how that affects travel insurance, even if you're not a Yank.

Four days seems a bit too long staying among sand and camels. Can't you just do one night stopover?

Have you even been there?

I had a short layover there at the airport. Most of what's around there in Myscat doesn't seem too inviting for a holiday. Unless one likes sand.

I do not think that a short stayover at an airport miles from any amenities is any reflection on the rest of the country!

I had the great pleasure to work in Oman on many occasions over many years and found it a fascinating country with delightful people and sites.

Oman is unlike any other "Muslim/Arabic country in many ways! That includes lounges in hotels openly serving alchohol, supermarkets with "pork rooms" and many other ways of being friendly to non-Muslim people!

I had a friend who visited Oman and was quite surprised what this country has to offer. It is not just desert and camels. There are mountains, a nice coastline and also areas with green vegetation during certain periods.
