American Airlines miles...any good for Thailand?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking about getting some miles with credit cards. What partners can you use to go from the US to Thailand....do they offer one way tickets like UAL and Delta...how many miles for US to BKK? Thanks.

American Airlines hooks up with Cathay Pacific or Japan Airlines out of Bangkok then either still on those airlines to USA or AA out of Tokyo/ Hong Kong.

Yes they partner with JAL. I flew that once starting from DFW I think it was connecting through Japan.

American Airlines is part of the OneWorld airline alliance. For travel between the US and Thailand, Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific are the two airlines that partner with American with the most flight frequency (unless you travel through Europe, in which case British Airways may be an option.)

Of course they offer one way tickets. The American Airlines website will have the award miles redemption chart that shows how many miles you'd need to travel from the US to Bangkok. (It's going to be under a section called AAdvantage.) A quick glance shows you can get a one way award ticket (in the economy section of the plane) from the US to Asia for as little as 35,000 miles.

Keep in mind that award tickets are limited - they are not available on all dates and can involve long layovers and inconvenient routings. I'd suggest you research the program on the AA website a bit before getting your hopes up that this is the solution to your travel habit.

I suggest you read up the AAdvantage section on Flyertalk. There are some extremely knowledgeable people on there.

I actually found that I could get to the Hong Kong from the US for as little as 32,500, which is great, however, flights to BKK or PNH were no where to be found.

Yes, one way tickets are available. AA partners with Cathay and JAL to BKK. Be advised to book as far as possible in advance and be flexible. You can book as far as 11 months in advance. I always book my awards in Business and they are pretty slim pickings if you don't book way in advance. The Business award level was recently increased to 140,000 miles RT; up from 110,000. Cathay and JAL are both superb.

It can be beneficial to Buy Miles when AA has these specials where you can get bonus miles when you purchase certain levels.
