Boatabike Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 (edited) As the title suggests, can anyone point me to a thread, site or post the requirements for teaching in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. I feel the need to start making plans in case things here get worse in their attempts to make thing better. I am presuming that this is very Thailand related and not off track. Thanks in advance. If there is anyone who has worked as a teacher in 2 or more of the above countries? Perhaps you would like to share your experiences of the good and bad points, especially if you can make a knowledgeable comparison to Thailand? Edited November 2, 2006 by Boatabike
Robski Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Hi Boatabie. I don't have any info for you as I'm not really experienced, but I am interested in how things are going for you in Kanchanaburi(?) regarding the the tests you are expected to take and the general atmos around the rule changes.
Rinrada Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Not a teacher and dont want to be but did a bit of proof reading for a couple of book printers a few years ago while working in Hanoi....also a bit of vol English (forgot about that) at the local Mach Bai hospital as thanks to the Docs for an ear op.... As said working there but was always being offered teaching stints at some of the local schools....no thanks P.P.however was much easier... There is an area called English St (u cant miss it) which has dozens of ...guess English schools/courses/classes going on and it would appear that anyone who can string a sentence will get a job there. Also small local agents about but just try word of mouth and asjk in in the local pubs. Fewer hangups than LOS....
Boatabike Posted November 3, 2006 Author Posted November 3, 2006 Hi Boatabike. I don't have any info for you as I'm not really experienced, but I am interested in how things are going for you in Kanchanaburi(?) regarding the tests you are expected to take and the general atmos around the rule changes. My school are also quite concerned as they phoned several other schools and contacts in the area to see if they could find a way to avoid this and the resounding answer was all schools are to submit the paperwork for all there foreign teachers. From this the powers that be will decide who has to take the test and who doesn't, maybe at that point schools can ask favours or not who knows. They (the schools) along with the rest of us are pretty much in the dark as to what it all entails, but they were surprised because they felt they were going to be able to help me out on this, and now they seem to feel they might not be able to. The paper work, for this area, has to be submitted by the 28th Nov. When they get back to us on what's next I don't know. I guess it all comes down to how serious they are about improving the quality of the piece of paper the person doing the teaching holds. But my school has told me they can't pay what a school in Bangkok pays, if the Gov. is going to supply the funding to hire only the top qualified teachers available then I guess that’s a good thing, but even if they do so will there be enough of these qualified teachers to go round? If I knew that someone else was going to take my place and that my little mafia darlings futures were going to be the better for it I would feel ok about having to move on to different climes. Well I think we all know that some where along the line, if this new strategy follows it's supposed course the result will not be in the benefit of a large number of school children, taking our hassles and worries out of the equation the kids, mine or yours, some where will suffer. Will the benefits outweigh the losses? Maybe in the private schools with money, maybe those rich parents will have better spoken kids, but the poor areas? The less central schools? The kids that think growing up to be mafia is a good option? I think not. I have spent nearly half my life in or visiting this country and my concern for the kids future is as much a concern as my own future, hehe it helps me bond better knowing their future and mine are equally uncertain.
