French Firm Proposes Two Green Energy Plants

France’s Groupe Quadran has proposed building an electricity plant in Phnom Penh fired by waste and a solar plant in Siem Reap province. The Ministry of Tourism yesterday welcomed the proposal, saying it will help keep Cambodia clean.

Tourism Minister Thong Khon said that the waste-fired plant in Phnom Penh would generate about 50 megawatts and the solar plant about 30 megawatts. He could not say how much would be invested or what the timeframe would be. “It’s a good project to make our cities clean and I do support the project. It will help keep the environment in the cities clean,” Mr. Khon said, adding he also encouraged City Hall and relevant parties to facilitate and accelerate the proposed projects.

He said the Kingdom could be the leading country in the rollout of the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard. Phnom Penh Municipal Hall administrative director Mean Chanyada said that City Hall had received the proposal from the French company to invest in collecting waste to generate electricity in the city.
