Thailand makes strides in eradicating human trafficking

BANGKOK, 26 April 2016 (NNT) - The Ministry of Labor is confident that Thailand will receive an upgrade in the U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report within the next three months.

Ministry Spokesperson Teerapol Khunmuang said that Thailand has submitted a new progress report to the U.S., after relevant agencies were told to ensure that every human rights law was not being compromised.

It was a move aimed at solving issues related to human trafficking and illegal migrants more comprehensively. Mr. Teerapol is positive Thailand’s ranking will improve when the report comes out in June. After working alongside the European Union on the issue, the country is expected to amend its law and enforce harsher penalties for human rights violations.

Several new changes to existing laws are now being considered by the Office of the Council of State. They will later be proposed to the National Legislative Assembly for consideration.

One post referring to the PM as "Uncle Joo" or "Uncle Too" has been removed from this thread.

Members are reminded of the following from the pinned topic in the Thailand News Forum:

Thailand remains under the close watch of the Thai military and the rules related to Social Media and posting on Thaivisa will follow the guidelines set forth by the government and the military. Here are some things that you should consider when posting:

All suspects in lese majeste cases, national security cases, violators of NCPO orders will face court martial. In the past, discussion of the lese majeste law has been allowed, but due to increased scrutiny by the government this will no longer be permitted on Thaivisa.

Any discussion of the Monarchy or members of the royal family in a political context will result in a ban. This includes vague comments that could be construed as referring to the Monarchy.

Please use discretion in your references to the government. Phrases which can be considered as anti-coup will be removed. Referring to Thailand or the government as a dictatorship, military dictatorship or other such terms will be removed. Any posts which can be construed as rumor mongering are not allowed.

Posters violating these rules and the forum rules will receive a warning, a possible suspension of posting privileges or a ban from the site.

I seem to recall some other minister saying the same thing about the illegal fishing problem, which is also a part of the human trafficing issue. We all know how well that worked out.

The sooner these slimy mouthed little weasels learn that actions speak louder then words the better. They seem to think words alone solve the problem. They must learn that the real world requires concrete sustained action.

Wouldn't hurt to go backwards and punish the previous ministers (all flavors) who conveniently ignored all these problems.

Another aligned matter - I wonder whether there is anything substantive to make job placement agencies much more professional and much more ethical and to cotinuously monitor there activities and to make lws about maximum fees etc.

And in the smaller local picture make it illegal for agencies / brokers to take 20% of income forever.

I would disagree. The government should put its limited resources into improving the situation as it is, not engaging in backward-looking recrimination.

There has been progress made in slavery. The sex slave industry in this area is gone. Two brothels closed over a year ago. No more slave girls at the curtained hotels. The hillside tribes have lost some income and Laos girls may have been sent home..

Haven't big arrests been sparse? What officials have been locked up for this? The last I remember of human trafficking was the cop that fled to Australia because he was getting death threats for getting close to exposing some pretty powerful and key people....

The EU does not think so.

That's precisely why they're pushing this propaganda.

The EU says Thailand is bad, so to completely negate that they just say that they are working on it and add a misleading 'fitting' headline. Now it seems like things are going in the right direction again...

Kept in the dark and fed BS under the yoke of Thainess. (They might want to abolish that if they're truly going to tackle 'slavery.')

Thailand makes strides to eradicate human trafficking...but we all know that Thais have short legs..that equates to lots of Thai-strides, & very little distance covered!

why stop at the last one ? you think this is something that has only just appeared in the past 2-4 years? You're another one who can't seem to move forward and is constantly blaming the past regime, which was ousted 2 years ago, in case you have forgotten, you know what they say about poor workmen right?

Well... This guy certainly has his opinion and while very few agree I will be interested in his

reaction when the US report does not read as he predicts. whistling.gif

The thing is, the report to be released most likely is based on 2015.

There was a discussion last year that went something like this:

Thai Gov: We are doing much better! We are confident the report will say so!

US Gov: You are not doing better. You are actually doing worse.

Thai Gov: You don't understand! That is old news! Everything is better now!

US Gov: [silence]
